Wells Superior Court

Criminal Cases

Corey Michael Reighter, 36, Fort Wayne, pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance or its metabolite in his blood, a Class C misdemeanor.

Sentenced to 60 days in the Wells County Jail, with all but four days suspended — credited as time served, and placed on probation for 361 days.

Ordered to serve 30 days of home detention, pay for his blood test and pay court costs and probation fees. Driver’s license suspended 30 days.

As part of a plea agreement charges of possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor; and operating a motor vehicle with an expired license plate, a Class C infraction, were all dismissed.

While patrolling Ind. 1 north of Ossian Dec. 30, 2021, a sheriff’s deputy noticed that a car ahead of him had a license plate that expired Sept. 21, 2021. He pulled the vehicle over near 1100N. A second deputy arrived as backup.

The first deputy observed that the driver, identified as Reighter, appeared impaired. The deputy then asked Reighter how much marijuana was in the vehicle. Reighter eventually admitted to having a vape pen with THC oil inside it. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

While Reighter reportedly only exhibited a few clues of impairment during standardized field sobriety tests, he allegedly exhibited two of the symptoms of impairment on the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement test. He was then taken into custody.

Preliminary plea of not guilty entered for Jared J. West, 34, Ossian, charged with disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor. Bond set at $1,000.

West is charged with striking Haley N. Reynolds, 26, at the residence they shared in the 600 block of Wheatridge Court in Ossian at midnight Feb. 27 after West allegedly accused Reynolds of being a bad mother for allowing the milk supply in the house to run out. Reynolds then reportedly got up and went and bought milk.

Jared West then allegedly started complaining that there was no one to take him to the methadone clinic in the morning and that allegedly started another argument that allegedly resulted in West striking Reynolds.

West countered that Reynolds had thrown a shoe at him that hit him in the mouth and that she had tried to strike him in the face.

After police and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, Kathy West, 63, Ossian, Jared West’s mother, also reportedly arrived at the scene. Jared West then pointed out to the officer investigating the case that his mother and Reynolds had started fighting in the garage. The officer and West reportedly entered the garage and witnessed Kathy West and Reynolds locked arm and arm apparently trying to take each other to the floor. Jared West and the officer reportedly separated the two.

Both Kathy West and Reynolds have also been charged with disorderly conduct, both Class B misdemeanors. Bond for each was set at $1,000.

Preliminary plea of not guilty entered for Jacob D. Pigg, 32, Huntington, charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor; operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalency of at least .08 percent but less than .15 percent, a Class C misdemeanor; no valid driver’s license in his possession, a Class C infraction, and unsafe movement from lane to lane, a Class C infraction.

Pigg is charged with driving a 2014 Dodge Dart up and over the sidewalk on Oak Street and into the grass of Life Community Church around 1:25 a.m. March 2. The car became mired in mud in the grass.

The rather forceful impact with the high curb on that side of the street caused extensive undercarriage damage to the vehicle.

The officer noted in his report that Pigg appeared intoxicated, smelled “strongly” of alcohol, failed field sobriety tests and blew a .138 percent alcohol concentration equivalency on a Breathalyzer test.
