Patty Atkins, a speech language pathologist for Northern Wells Community Schools, will be the featured speaker at the regular weekly meeting of the Ossian Rotary Club.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, at 7:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ossian.
Atkins started the after-school Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics program with fellow teacher Kellyn Bell seven years ago. Both were passionate about the great impact those activities have on a student’s growth.
To assist their efforts, Ossian Rotary applied for and received a Rotary International District Grant, which was used to purchase instructional kits for each classroom at Ossian Elementary School. The kits have been in use since the beginning of the current school year. Atkins will detail how the kits assist the local students.
Teachers Atkins and Bell also received VOYA’s Unsung Heros award in 2016 for their work with the STEAM program. To further their own education, they attended the Space Educators Conference at the Kennedy Space Center.
They also were instrumental in helping start Ossian Elementary’s Robotics team, serving as assistant coaches the first season, leading that team to the state finals in Indianapolis.
