The Wells County Area Plan Commission acted on two petitions Thursday night, recommending that property in Craigville be rezoned to allow for a possible business expansion and approving a development plan to allow a quarry to expand in Rock Creek Township.

Meyer Building LLC wants to expand the footprint of its headquarters property on Craigville’s north side by rezoning an adjoining parcel of property, which the business owns, from S-1 (suburban residential) to I-1 (industrial).

Matthew Gerber, the company’s owner, said the move will unite two adjoining parcels the company has owned for approximately 10 years.

The issue brought no questions from the board or from the public.

The eight APC members present — Harry Baumgartner Jr., Tyson Brooks, Bill Horan, Josh Hunt,  Jerome Markley, Tim Rohr, John Schuhmacher, and Becky Stone-Smith — all voted to recommend to the Wells County Commissioners that the property be rezoned as requested. (Three other APC members — Cory Elzey, Jarrod Hahn, and Melissa Woodworth — were not present for the meeting.)

The second petition considered by the APC Thursday took a little longer, as representatives of the Rock Creek Quarry presented a development plan for expansion.

The plans are to expand the quarry by 28 acres. It current exists on 37 acres at the intersection of Wells County Roads 100N and 500W.

They said it would be approximately two years before ground is broken and seven to 10 years before much work is done in the expansion area.

The only permit that will be required is one from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for erosion control.

Quarry representatives said that dust control would continue to be facilitated by spraying water at the site and, in case of excessive wind, ceasing operations temporarily.

There was no comment from the public on the development plan. The vote to approve the plan was 8-0.
