One person has died and another is in critical condition following a head-on crash on State Road 116 on Friday.

According to a press release from the Wells County Sheriff’s Department, a 2016 Jeep Patriot was traveling northwest on S.R. 116 near County Road 200 west at approximately 5:30 a.m. when, for an unknown reason, the driver crossed over the center line and into the southeast lane. The driver of a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado traveling southwest reportedly attempted to swerve to the left, but the Jeep swerved back into the northwest lane, where the vehicles collided head-on.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver is in critical condition and was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital.

The WCSD withheld the names of the individuals involved, pending notification to the families. An official crash report is pending.
