Donald G. “Gean” Stewart, 86, of Poneto, passed away Sunday morning, April 21, 2024, at his residence.

Gean was born in Lee’s Summit, Mo., on June 1, 1937, to William and Dorothy (Williams) Stewart. Both parents preceded him in death. He married Judith A. Murray in Wells County on Aug. 15, 1959; she survives.

Gean worked as a meat cutter for 51 years, cutting meat at Maloley’s in Bluffton, Coffels in Montpelier and Gerber Grocery in Bluffton. He later worked part-time as a driver for Family Ford of Bluffton. 

Gean enjoyed telling stories, riddles, and gardening. He was a conversationalist who enjoyed being around people and enjoyed stopping by unannounced to say hello to everyone. He loved his family and especially loved his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his great-great grandchild.

In addition to his wife of almost 65 years, Gean is survived by two daughters, Carol Nestleroad (Bruce Smith) of Craigville and Rhonda Stewart of Berne; two grandchildren, Michael (Kris) Nestleroad and Adam Stewart both of Bluffton; five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Helen Richards of Alabama, and Rose Dewitt of Tennessee; a brother, Frank Case Jr. of Texas; and a daughter-in-law, Alicia Stewart of Bluffton.

In addition to his parents, Gean was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Stewart and Larry Stewart; a sister, Virginia Horner; a brother, Bill Stewart; and great-grandchild, Braden Nestleroad.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Goodwin – Cale & Harnish Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. Burial will take place at a later date.
