Greg Perigo is vice president of the Super Shot board in Allen County. He is asking everyone to be aware of the outbreak of measles in 2024. He reports:
“So far in 2024, at least 35 cases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about double the number at this point last year. Indiana is on that list. In 1992 we wept when nearly 30 Allen County children were reported to have contracted measles. In 2000, we cheered when the US and other nations declared that measles – one of the most contagious and dangerous disease to mankind was eradicated. Fast forward 25 years and sadly the story repeats as measles has crept back into our society. Norwell’s show choirs won multip1e awards at the Marysville Showcase in Ohio recently. Mark your calendars for this date:
All the Norwell Show Choirs will perform their competition shows one last time at the annual Reflections concert May 10 in the Norwell Auditorium. The performance will start at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7:00. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
We have some celebrities around our area. Congratulations to Liberty Center/Wells County basketball player Dick Harris who was recently inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in Indianapolis. He was written up in the News-Banner on Saturday March 23rd. We at Union Center Alumni were all excited when they built the Hall of Fame museum at New Castle. My mother paid for bricks to be laid for her sons Darrell and Cedric Botts and Maurice and David McBride. East Union Center Alumni paid for a brick also. I think they also paid for some for coaches at Union. I haven’t been down there for a long time but it was a great museum and I expect it is more than great now. It’s just a short trip from here so you may want to go. Dick had a long career in basketball so I am sure you can get his life story on the computer. Dick was a senior at Liberty Center in 1964.
Congratulations to Homestead graduate Meridian Prall who recently sang at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City where she became one of 10 finalists. She was chosen as one of the five winners after months of participating in rounds of competition that began in December. The mezzo-soprano is 28 years old and lives now in Edwardsburg, Michigan with her husband.
Not all celebrities are human beings as dogs win contests also. French Bulldogs remained the top breed last year. They also won the top place in 2022. They are bat eared, scaled down bullthese dogs. Small and solidly built, pushed -face dogs have a penchant for comically pensive expressions and they take city living in stride.
Prices on everything have gone up considerably over the years. In August of 1961 our son Doug was 5 1/2 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes. He had to take an injection of insulin from then on every day. We bought his vial of insulin at the Markle Pharmacy (now the PICKLE) and it cost $1.50 and lasted for a month. Now your insulin for those who are not on medicare is very expensive.
