Today’s world finds waiting to be a serious problem. Society has become so accustomed to instant messages, video streaming, fast food, and a 24-hour news cycle that we have lost the ability to wait patiently for something. (If in doubt, observe those around you while waiting in a doctor’s office, at the license branch, even standing in the checkout lane.)
Whatever the reason, the art of thoughtful, intentional waiting seems to be a trait of past generations.
Awaiting the birth of a child, anticipating a birthday celebration, looking forward to a wedding, new job, even retirement: this world is filled with the hopes, dreams, prayers, and plans of millions of human hearts.
Anticipating the good things of life is a worthy goal, yet there can be great benefits in waiting for what we most desire. In fact, not immediately receiving something we long for often teaches lessons of good character and reliance on God as our ultimate Provider.
If you find yourself longing for what seems impossible, consider the men and women whose lives set an example during their seasons of waiting.
Abraham and Sarah, longing for a son.
Joseph, falsely imprisoned.
Moses, Caleb, and Joshua, seeking a Promised Land.
Hannah, desiring the child of her heart.
Job in his suffering, David after being annointed king, Daniel seeking answers to prayer, Jesus spending 40 days in preparation for ministry, even God awaiting the “fullness of time” (Galatians 4:4) to send the Messiah — every life provides lessons as we face unmet expectations and the disappointment of unfulfilled dreams.
Wait time, especially the spiritual variety, is best invested in listening to God’s wisdom.
By humbling ourselves under God’s hand we are prepared for eventual exaltation (1 Peter 5:6-7).
Our reliance is ultimately in God’s power to develop and complete His work in us (Philippians 1:6 & 2:13).
We can rest assured that God works all things together for good in the lives of His children (Romans 8:28).
God alone can mold us into the image of Christ (Ephesians 2:10).
Waiting for God to work? Spend time with Him so you don’t waste the waiting.
