Norwell walks off Leo in conference baseball opener 

The Norwell Knights went out with a bang in its first conference game of the season with a walk off home win over Leo 6-5 Tuesday.

The Knights were down by two runs heading into the final inning of play when Luke Graft, Brody Bolyn, and Lleyton Bailey got on base, and all came around to score, contributing to the win.

Graham Gaier was the hero with a suicide squeeze to bring Bailey home.

Bolyn led the team with three hits, including a double. Graft, Trey Bodenheimer, and Gaier all had two-hit games.

Lane Lewis picked up his third win of the season, throwing a scoreless top of the seventh, striking out two Lions, and only allowing a hit.

Curtis Ellis was the starter, going six innings, allowing five runs on six hits, striking out 10.

Norwell will be at Bellmont at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27.

Tigers rout Raiders in ACAC baseball game 

The Bluffton Tigers defeated Wells County rival Southern Wells on Tuesday at home 14-4.

The Tigers are now 10-3 on the season, and the Raiders are 3-9.

Andrew Onuegbu led the team with four hits, including a double and an RBI, while also stealing three bases. Eli Garrett and Braxton Betancourt had two-hit games. Betancourt, Kayden King, and AJ Streveler had two RBIs each.

Southern Wells leaders included two-hit games by Kedrik Sonnigsen and Caleb Johnson. Jenson Nusbaumer had a double and an RBI.

Streveler got the win on the mound, throwing four innings, allowing no runs on two hits, and striking out three.

Sonnigsen got the loss for the Raiders.

Bluffton will be at Woodlan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27.

Southern Wells will host Heritage at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27.

Knights get past Lions in close girls’ tennis match

Norwell’s girls’ tennis team escaped with a 3-2 victory over Leo in a home Northeast 8 Conference Tuesday.

The Knights are now 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.

Individual varsity results:

• Faith Brandenberger (L) defeated Addy Heyerly (N) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 1 singles.

• McKenna McNabb (N) defeated Bella Bonecutter (L) 6-0, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.

• Delaney Hoover (N) defeated Alyssa Stopher (L) 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.

• Annabelle Johnson and Macy Felger (N) defeated Carys Merkler and Leah Marquardt (L) 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles,

• Jordyn Xayyachack and Macie Saalfrank (N) defeated Molli Runestad Grace Keener (L) 6-2, 7-6(9) in No. 2 doubles.

The Knights junior varsity team also picked up a win, defeating the Lions 9-1. The team is now 7-0.

Knight boys top Eagles, girls fall in track meet

The Norwell boys’ track team came away with a win, and the girls fell by two points at home against Columbia City Tuesday.

The boys’ team won by a score of 77-55, while the girls lost 67-65.

Event winners for the boys were:

• Cohen Bailey in the 400m with a time of 52.3.

• Norwell’s 4×800 relay team with a time of 9:06.3.

Norwell’s 4x400m relay team with a time of 3:35.1.

• Kyle Zeddis in the discus with a throw of 135 feet two inches.

• Jake Parker in the 11m hurdles with a time of 15.4 and in the 300m hurdles with a time of 41.6.

• Trevon Stoppenhagen in the 100m with a time of 10.8 and in the 200m with a time of 22.4

• Winston Frauhiger in the high jump with a jump of six feet two inches.

• Norwell’s 4x100m relay team with a time of 45.2.

• Zach Waldman in the 3200m with a time of 10:52.6.

• Jada Dale in the 400m with a time of 61.1 and in the 200m with a time of 27.5

• Kaylee Eicher in the discus with a throw of 82 feet one inch.

• Emma Bailey in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.3 and in the 300m hurdles with a time of 50.2.

• Abbie Dale in the 100m with a time of 12.6.

• Emerson Meredith in the high jump with a jump of four feet six inches and in the pole vault with a jump of nine feet.

Raiders fall to Starfires in boys’ & girls’ track

Southern Wells dropped a home solo meet with South Adams on Tuesday in both boys’ and girls’ track.

The boys lost 79-44, while the girls fell 94-20.

Top-performers for the boys were:

• Andrew Aker, Joshua Bricker, Potter Garrett, and Miles Garrett first in the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:13.9.

• Potter Garrett first in the 1600m with a time of 4:57.8 and second in the 800m with a time of 2:22.4.

• Bricker first in the 3200m with a time of 10:58.2.

• Nick Lozoya first in the high jump with a jump of five feet two inches.

• Peyton Long first in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet one inch.

• Perrin Gates first in the discus with a throw of 118 feet three inches.

• Aidan Brewster, Peyton Ellis, Kane Jenkins, and Lozoya first in the 4×100 relay with a time of 49.3.

Top performers for the girls were:

Knights fall in NE8 boys’ golf to Vikings

The Norwell boys’ golf team dropped to 11-4 overall with a loss at Huntington North on Tuesday.

The Vikings won by a team score of 164-168, as the Knights now are 0-3 in conference play.

Leading the way for Norwell on the individual scoring sheet were Cooper Sloan and Ethan Ottinger, who both shot 41s on the day. Following those two were Derek Smith and Ashton Federspiel with 43s and Bodie Zimmer with 47.

Huntington North also won the junior varsity match with a score of 193-198.

The leading scorer for the Knights was Chase Hulvey with a 45, followed by Luke Herrell (50), Grant Mishler (51), Kaedyn Quintanilla (52), and Cavin SMithley (58).

Norwell will be at Canterbury’s Invitational at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29.

Tigers fall just short in ACAC girls’ tennis match to Starfires

The Bluffton girls’ tennis team fell on the road at South Adams on Tuesday in a close 3-2 conference match.

Results for varsity:

• Emma Schwartz (B) defeated Samantha Weigel (SA) 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in No. 1 singles. 

• Ava Kinsey (SA) defeated Gretchen Crist (B) 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

• Hazel Pfister (B) defeated Grace Barkley (SA) 7-5, 2-0. Starfires forfeit due to injury in No. 3 singles.

• Chloe Summerset and Lexie Mckibbens (SA) defeated Alexis Grover and Eve Corkwell (B) 6-3, 7-5 in No. 1 doubles.

• Maggie Nussbaum and Malina Mawhorr (SA) defeated Kinzie Fiechter and Zara Eisenhurt (B) 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles.

Knights fall to Lions in junior varsity baseball

The Norwell junior varsity baseball team fell 15-5 in six innings on the road Tuesday.

The Knight’s offense was led by Gary Riley, who had two hits in the game and an RBI. Korben Neunschwander collected two RBIs on a base hit.

Norwell will host Bellmont at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27.
