The extension of the city’s trail system west to the Old Bluffton Cemetery will be discussed the evening of April 27 at the Commerce and Visitors Centre.

The extension of Hale Street in front of the Old Bluffton Cemetery is likely to be part of a plan to extend the city’s trail system to the cemetery. An explanatory meeting on the possible trail extension will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Commerce and Visitors Centre. (Photo by Dave Schultz)

Three engineering students from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology — Brendan Downey, Julia McGuire, and Kenton Pardue — took on the trail extension as a senior project, working on it since September. Doug Sundling, the city’s former consultant on planning and infrastructure, and Brandy Fiechter, the superintendent of the Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department, have been working with the students on the plans.

  • The presentation of the plans for the extension of the Interurban Trail to the Old Bluffton Cemetery will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the lower level of the Commerce and Visitors Centre, 211 Water St.

Sundling says that the students picked up the project on the second go-around. Rose-Hulman asked for potential projects in 2021 and Sundling submitted the trail extension, but no one chose to do it. Rose-Hulman asked that the project be resubmitted for the 2022-23 senior class and Downey, McGuire, and Pardue had chosen to do it.

“The three have been working with Brandy Fiechter and myself since then and are prepared to do the final part of their senior project — a presentation of their ideas,” Sundling said in an email.
