At 5 p.m. — or more than two hours after school dismissed Wednesday — the Norwell Middle School received a bomb threat.

The school was cleared of all students and members of the staff that were still in the building, according to Superintendent Mike Springer in an email sent to parents.

“Shortly after, members of the Wells County Sherriff’s Department, Fort Wayne Police Department, and Indiana State Police conducted a full search and sweep of the campus, which included Fort Wayne PD K-9 units which specialize in detecting explosive(s). After the sweep was complete, law enforcement confirmed that the threat was unsubstantiated, and staff was given (the) all clear to reenter the building,” wrote Principal Kam Meyer in a separate email.

Meyer added, “We would like to reiterate that your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. As previously stated, law enforcement confirms that there is no imminent threat. Therefore, school will be in session (today) as normal at all NWCS campuses.

“Parents, if you do not feel comfortable sending your child to school tomorrow, the absence will be excused. If this is the case, please contact the attendance line 260-543-2213.”

He added that any other questions may be directed to the middle school office.
