Fifty years after the fact, an organization called Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and American Legion Post 111 in Bluffton, is determined to show gratitude to the veterans of the Vietnam era after being disregarded all those years ago.

Representatives of the organization will be at Post 111 from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, “to meet and personally welcome home veterans of the Vietnam era,” Wells County Veterans Service Officer Dewey Randall said in a press release. “A gift in the form of the hardcover book ‘A Time To Honor’ and a DVD documentary ‘The Journey Home’ will be individually presented to each Vietnam Era veteran in attendance.”

Randall will also be on site to answer questions regarding benefits available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs.

“All veterans of the Vietnam Era are encouraged to attend this event, not withstanding whether their service was in Vietnam, in the United States, or at any location around the world,” the release said. “All who served during that era are welcome no matter if their service was in the Active Duty Military, in the National Guard, or in the Reserve Forces of the United States.”

Randall said the goal is to personally thank and welcome home 150 Wells County veterans during the event.
