The IHSAA approved two new sports for the next school year announced on Monday.

Girls wrestling and boys volleyball will soon be recognized by the organization after the board of directors approved of the sports during the annual review Monday afternoon.

The hopeful sports went and played through the IHSAA’s Emerging Sport Process and will be assigned to its familiar time of the season next year. Girls wrestling will be the first to debut, as it will be assigned to the winter sports season. Boys volleyball will follow as a spring sport.

According to the IHSAA’s press release, girls wrestling has more than 1,400 wrestlers competing for 177 different high schools and boys volleyball has 100 teams.

Girls lacrosse is another sport in the Emerging Sport Process, and was tabled to the June Executive Committee meeting.
