Norwell’s baseball season got off to a hot start, shutting out No. 6 Brownstown Central on the road and topping Evansville Central 7-6.

New head coach Christian Bohata and his Knights’ crew made the near three-hour bus trip to Brownstown Central, then went over to Bloomington South to face Evansville Christian.

Bohata picked up his first career win as a varsity coach in the 5-0 victory over the Braves.

After, six hours later, Norwell led 7-1 heading into the seventh inning against the Bears. Then, Evansville Central made it interesting and scored five runs in the final frame, but fell one run short that would have forced extra innings.

The story of the two games was the starting pitchers, where Taylor University signee Lane Lewis and Huntington University signee,Cade Shelton went six full innings and allowed one run between the two of them.

Lewis struck out seven Braves in his senior debut, allowed three hits and walked none. Shelton allowed just one run, one hit and walk each and struck out 10.

To clean up Game 1, junior Noah Turk came into the seventh inning without allowing a run to seal the deal.

At the plate, Noah Schamerloh and Cayden Cassel doubled home a run each. Korben Neuenschwander and Logan Cotton also plated RBI.

Adam McBride and Cassel both had two hits in the contest.

The Knights also stole eight bags and posted a perfect fielding percentage. Shelton led the way with two stolen bases in the game.

In Game 2, Shelton helped himself to another extra base hit and drove in two runs. Neuenschwander had two RBI and a single. Lewis andd Cassel rounded out the RBI’s. Collin Burnes’ lone hit was a triple.

Norwell will visit South Adams starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.
