Back on Sept. 30, 2022, the News-Banner published an article on a new trail along Ind. 124. I wrote about this issue back in 2001 after I moved into what’s now called Bluffton Woods Mobile Home Park.
I wrote about the unsafe means people walking along this straight of highway faced. You see many walking along here, being anywhere from kids of all ages to bicycles, strollers with babies in them and for a period of time, there was a gentleman in his power wheelchair trying to navigate his way to downtown.
I drive past the pedestrian crossing on North Main Street many times and have never seen anyone using it. But the cost was (how much)? Now, we’re looking at a trail out to Lancaster Park and maybe eventually to Pokagon State Park with connections to the Fort Wayne trail system.
I have no problems with the trails as they are obviously used daily by many, especially the Rivergreenway. And it’s great for the users for the health benefits.
But I seriously feel for the safety of the people walking along Ind. 124. They need some assistance in the name of safety. Yes, it has been looked into, but maybe it’s time to be more serious about it. Money was spent on a little-used crossing on Ind. 1, maybe some of that could have been used in the name of safety along 124.
