Tigers open ACAC baseball play with win over starfires

Bluffton baseball is now 1-0 in conference play, with a 4-1 road victory at South Adams on Thursday.

The Tigers are now 8-2 on the season.

Drew Pressler had half of Bluffton’s four hits, going two-for-three and scoring a run.

AJ Streveler got the only RBI in the game with a base hit, and Griffin Morgan added a double.

The Starfires had three errors in the game.

Braxton Betancourt got the win on the mound, going six innings strong with only one hit and one unearned run, striking out 13.

Streveler got the same, striking out three in his lone inning in the seventh to seal the deal.

Bluffton will host Mississinewa at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Knights fall to Spartans in baseball

Norwell dropped to 8-2 on the season after an 8-4 road loss to area power Homestead Thursday.

The Knights were led by Luke Graft, who had the only multi-hit game for his team. Curtis Ellis drove in two runs on a double, while Lleyton Bailey drove in one with his double.

Luke McBride also tacked on a double.

Lane Lewis got the loss, going five innings allowing seven runs, and striking out six. Cade Shelton went an inning and gave up a run while striking out two.

Norwell will be at Angola at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 21.

Tigers earn 2nd girls tennis with win over Bulldogs

The Bluffton girls’ tennis team earned its second victory of the year with a 4-1 home win over New Haven on Thursday.

Results for varsity:

• Malee Snodgrass defeated Emma Schwartz 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles for New Haven’s only win.

• Gretchen Crist defeated Kendall Rowland 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

• Hazel Pfister defeated Elia Colin 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

• Alexis Grover and Eve Corkwell defeated Jessica Didion and Aaliyah Castians 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles.

• Ella Wheeler and Kinzie Fiectcher defeated Nakia Capers and Brooke Thornhill 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles.

Bluffton also won the junior varsity match 5-3.

• Alex Buchannoun defeated Zoey Schmidt 6-3.

• Emily Gordillo and Elia Doust defeated Tiffany Lanning and Faragiz G’abullayeva.

Raider boys defeat Broncos, girls fall in track

The Southern Wells track teams hosted Daleville for boys’ and girls’ track on Thursday.

The boys’ team defeated the Broncos 79-32, while the girls lost 79-25.

Individual winners for the boys were:

• Andrew Aker, Potter Garrett, Joshua Bricker, and Rio Horner in the 4×800 with a time of 9:47.9

• Aidan Brewster, Eli Elmore, Kane Jenkins, and Aiden Carroll in the 4×100 with a time of 50.63.

• Carroll, Garrett, Jenkins, and Elmore in the 4x400m with a time of 4:12.96

• Kane Jenkins in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.9 and in the 300m IM with a time of 48.28.

• Potter Garrett in the 1600m with a time of 5:12.66 and in the 800m with a time of 2:21.87.

• Joshua Bricker in the 3200m with a time of 11:46.5.

• Peyton Long in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet six inches.

• Perrin Gates in the discus with a throw of 115 feet three inches.

Top placers for the girls:

• Brooke Tinner first in the high jump with a jump of five feet.

• Bella Maul second in the 400m with a time of 1:14.25.

• Brianna Hughett in the 300m IM with a time of 1:23.69 and second in the high jump with a jump of four feet eight inches.

• Lexie Fiechter in the 800m with a time of 3:10.49.

• second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 5:34.23.

• Karlee Warner second in the shot put with a throw of 25 feet seven inches.

Southern Wells will be at the Eastern Relays at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Raiders lose ACAC softball opener to Jets

Southern Wells dropped the first conference game of the season at home in a 13-0 rout to Adams Central on Thursday.

The Raiders tallied hits from Kayleigh Jones, Raigen Tarr, and Kyah Thomas.

Southern Wells will be at South Side at 5 p.m. Monday, April 24

Jets edge the Raiders in baseball

Southern Wells lost in a close 8-5 baseball game to Adams Central Thursday.

Jenson Nusbaumer led the Raiders with a double and two RBIs in the game. Bryar Gearheart also had an RBI and stole two bases.

Cody Perdue got the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (six earned) and struck out four.

Southern Wells will be at Anderson Prep at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 21. 

Raiders fall to Jets, Knights

The Southern Wells boys’ golf team placed third in a three-team meet at Dogwood Glen Golf Club on Thursday.

Southwood took first with a score of 181, followed by Adams Central with 190, and Southern Wells with 214.

Gabe McElhaney was the top-scorer for the Raiders with a score of 47, followed by Chandler Oswalt (54), Quinton Mullins (55), and Bailey Couch (58).

Southern Wells will be at the South Adams Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Tigers junior varsity baseball tops Starfires

Bluffton’s junior varsity baseball team defeated South Adams 9-5 at home on Thursday.

Dane Schlagenhauf led the Tigers with three hits in the game that included a triple and two RBIs. Gavin Sawyer added two hits.

Kaleb Green got the win going 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and one run, striking out 11.

Bluffton will be at Northfield at 5 p.m. Friday, April 21.

Knights JV drop to Spartans in baseball

Norwell’s junior varsity baseball team dropped 6-5 to Homestead on Thursday.

Luke Ward led the Knights with two hits and two RBIs with a double. Noah Schamerloh hit a triple and scored in the game.

Adam McBride threw four innings, allowing four runs (one earned), and struck out three.

The two will meet again in their next game at Homestead starting at 5 p.m. Monday, April 24.

Tigers place first, Knights second in MS golf meet

Bluffton and Norwell competed in a three-team middle school golf match on Thursday.

Bluffton won the meet with a score of 212, Norwell second at 232, and Churubusco third at 297.

The Tigers were led by Reid Abbett’s 38, followed by Rafe Gerber (42), Aba Atkins (43), Gibson Grieser (43), and Gavin Grieser (46).

Norwell was led by Eli Sonnigsen with a score of 42, followed by  Isaiah Goeglein (44) Trip Mitchel (46), Cash Fegley and Westin Miller (50).

Bluffton also won the junior varsity match with a score of 255.

The Tigers were led by Parker Nash with a 46, followed by Abram Gehrett and Evan Klopfenstein (50), Will Ault (52), and Graham Linderwell (57).

Norwell shot a 274 for second place, led by Sam Squires and Emma Burnau’s 52, followed by Cole Belkema (54), Lillianya Sailors (57), and Vivian Rodenbach (59).
