Knights fall to Athenians, beat Panthers in baseball

The Norwell baseball team took a road trip down to Crawfordsville High School for two games on Saturday.

The Knights fell to 7-2 on the season with a loss to Class 3A No. 6 Crawfordsville 8-5, but bounced back later in the day to defeat Griffith 14-4.

In the loss, five of Norwell’s seven hits went for extra bases. Lleyton Bailey hit a home run and drove in two runs, Drew Graft had a double on two hits, and the group of Cale Mallery, Luke Graft, and Brody Bolyn all had doubles.

Lane Lewis got the loss, going five innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits, striking out six. Bailey threw in relief for a scoreless inning and struck out one.

In Game 2, the Knights were led by Bolyn and Drew Graft’s two-hit games, with Graft hitting a home run.

Cade Shelton added four RBIs on the day with a home run. Luke McBride, Trey Bodenheimer, Logan Cotton, and Bolyn all had doubles.

Bolyn also got the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing four runs on five hits, striking out eight.

Norwell will be on the road to visit Bluffton at 5 p.m. Monday, April 17.

Raiders drop two in softball to Apaches

The Southern Wells softball team dropped to 1-7 on the softball season with a doubleheader loss to Wabash on the road Saturday.

In Game 1, the Apaches shut out the Raiders with a 10-0 win.

Southern Wells mustered four hits in the game, two by Hannah Duncan and one each from Kyah Thomas and Jadyn Yencer.

Emma Parks got the loss on the mound allowing 10 runs in four innings, but only one was earned.

The score was closer in Game 2, as Wabash defeated Southern Wells 9-7.

Yencer had a three-hit day at the plate and scored two runs, and also stole three bases. Collena Reeves went two-for-four with a triple and drove in two runs as well as scoring two. Raigen Tarr and Parks added two hits each. Parks and Duncan had doubles.

Kyah Thomas got the loss on the mound going all six innings, allowing nine runs (three earned), and striking out three.

Southern Wells will host Wayne starting at 5:30 Monday, April 17.

Knights beat Bruins in junior varsity softball

The Norwell junior varsity softball team traveled to Northrop on Saturday and beat the Bruins 10-5.

The Knights tallied 12 hits in the day, but Leah Werling had five of them. She produced two RBIs on the day and hit a double in the game.

Kara Brown was the winning pitcher goibe five innings, striking out 10 and allowed one unearned run.

Norwell will travel to Adams Central at 5 p.m. Monday, April 17.

Norwell boys win IPT track relays, girls third

Both Norwell track teams traveled to Heritage to compete at the IPT Relays.

The boys’ team won with a team score of 128. Heritage placed second with 101, followed by New Haven (95), Concordia (66), and Bishop Luers (30).

New Haven won the girls’ event with a score of 107, followed by Heritage (98), Norwell (89), Concordia (67), Blackhawk Christian (29), Lakewood Park (20), and Bishop Luers (17).

• Jake Parker first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.06.

• Bobby Kwandrans, Marin MElcher, Morris, and Neuenschwander second in the 4×800 relay with a time of 9:03.89.

• Zach Waldman, Luke Johnson, Gavin Threewits, and Elijah Jacob second in the 4×1600 relay with a time of 20:37.57.

• Hayden Bennett, Parker, Bonjour, and Stoppenhagen third in the sprung medley relay with a time of 2:08.68.

• Winston Frauhiger first in the high jump with a jump of six-feet-six-inches.
