Norwell guard Luke McBride made history Friday night on an action-packed 48-46 win over Homestead.

The senior hit an important jumpshot near the left baseline that made him the Knights’ all-time leading scorer, passing Darin Archbold with 1,813 points at the time of the shot. McBride knew that that was the one to do it.

Luke McBride became Norwell’s all-time leading basketball scorer Friday night beating the previous record of 1,811 points set by Darin Archbold in 1988. McBride now has 1,822 points, which is also the county record. Above, McBride is shown with father and coach, Mike McBride, holding a commemorative ball.

“Yeah, I knew coming in it was 14 I needed. I was aware,” he said after the game. “I just tried to get to a spot and put up a good shot and that’s what I did.”

McBride hit the shot at the 5:14 mark in the third quarter. As soon as he hit it, head coach, and also father, Mike McBride used a timeout to honor Luke.

The crowd roared, and public address announcer Jamie Feldheiser announced the feat to the fans while father and son hugged at centercourt. Fellow teammates, especially the six other seniors who have been a part of the journey for a long time, congratulated Luke.

“He had a lot of his best friends out here playing with him and that’s a special thing because those kids sacrificed a lot so he could have that opportunity,” coach McBride said.

Archbold held first place since 1988, a 35-year record that was also the Wells County boys’ scoring record.

“It means a lot,” he said. “To be the top Norwell scorer and especially with the great players that we’ve had here in this program over the years. I just tried to work on my game the best that I could and I was really determined to be the best player that I could be and it just means a lot.”

McBride finished the game with 24 points, the same number on the front and back of his jersey, and led the Knights to a win over Homestead. That was also his last game played in The Castle as it was Senior Night, and he appreciates the support from the community.

“It’s a great experience for me,” he said. “Senior Night here, it’s a great atmosphere and over the last few years the crowds always been really supportive, and we’ve always had good turnouts for games, and it means a lot from the support from this team, from the fans, and the students.”
