WOODBURN — Points were hard to come by for the Southern Wells Lady Raiders as they fell to the host Woodlan Lady Warriors 50-19 in the ACAC tournament semifinals Friday night.
The second quarter was a bright spot for the Raiders (6-10) as they tallied 13 of their points in that frame, including five of their seven made field goals.
“We shot the ball,” coach Jessica Killingbeck said, noting that’s what made this quarter stand out. “We didn’t look for our shot tonight, and you can’t score if you don’t shoot the ball. We’ve got to find a way to put the ball in the bucket, and we’re not going to be able to put the ball in the bucket if we don’t have kids start to gain confidence that they can shoot it. You’re not going to know if it’s going to go in or not if you’re not going to shoot it.”
The Raiders did not get on the board until Avah Miner’s layup early in the second. By then, the Warriors (16-3) had raced out to a 14-0 lead.
But Southern Wells followed Miner’s bucket with back-to-back triples from Zoe Needler and Faith Blair, drawing within 14-8 and forcing a Woodlan timeout.
The Warriors countered with a 13-2 run and took a 27-13 lead into halftime.
Woodlan scored the first seven points of the second half to push its lead over 20.
Ashlie Needler netted the Raiders’ only field goal of the third quarter to go along with two free throws from Miner.
Zoe Needler scored the Raiders’ final points of the game on a jump shot with about five minutes remaining.
The Raiders struggled with turnovers, finishing with 23. This led to only 32 shot attempts, of which they made just seven.
Four players did the scoring for Southern Wells: Zoe Needler had seven, Miner had five, Ashlie Needler scored four, and Blair had three.
Avah Smith topped the Warriors with 20, while Brooke Kneubuhler added 10.
With only a couple of weeks left in the regular season, Killingbeck feels her team is doing well on the defensive end of the floor but needs to start finding ways to score.
“Defensively, we’ve been really good the last few weeks, so I’d like to continue that trend,” she said. “Just continue to compete and get after it. I thought our kids fought tonight. We did the dirty work on the defensive end, they executed the gameplan, but it comes down to looking to score the basket and not standing around and waiting for one player to step up and do it. It’s going to have to take all five of us on the floor.”
Southern Wells will travel to Wes-Del Tuesday night.
