WABASH— If overall records were all anyone looked at, it would have been nearly impossible to expect what transpired between the Southern Wells Raiders and Southwood Knights Tuesday evening.
The Raiders entered on a three-game winning streak, while the Knights were winless in five games.
But it was the Knights (1-5) who took it to the Raiders (3-4) from the opening tip, sending the Raiders home with a 78-34 setback.
“I think we got outplayed in every single facet of the game,” coach Joel Roush said.
Southern Wells barely resembled a team that had won three times in the past week.
The Raiders finished with 20 turnovers, made only 10 field goals, and looked overwhelmed from the start.
A 17-0 run by the Knights put the Raiders in a 27-4 hole. The Knights were 19 of 35 overall in the first half and took a 43-15 lead at intermission.
Cole Winer was responsible for a lot of the damage, scoring 22 of his team-leading 30 points before halftime.
Southern Wells matched Southwood’s 13 points in the third quarter, but that was followed by a 22-6 onslaught from the home team in the fourth.
The Raiders did not score more than two consecutive unanswered points until Evan Pennington made two free throws, and Gage Roberts got a bucket early in the second half.
They never got more than five in a row during any stretch of the game as Southwood continued to hit shots, on its way to shooting just over 50 percent.
The Knights scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter and pushed their lead above 40 points.
No Raiders reached double figures, with Chandler Oswalt scoring nine points while Pennington had eight and Roberts added six.
Southwood also got 15 points from Nathan Lehner and 12 from Will Winer.
A long layoff awaits the Raiders, who will not play again until they host Heritage on January 7.
“We need to get better,” Roush said. “We need to get better in a hurry, and we’ve got some time to get that done.”
Southern Wells won the JV game 47-45. Andrew Aker scored 17 points, Tucker Worster added 13, and Levi Woodward had 10.
