Some mighty rich pies were sold in the Event Tent Thursday at Ossian Days.

Helen Witte’s two French apple cream pies sold for a combined $8,400 — $4,300 for the first pie and $4,100 for the second — easily crushing last year’s record of $5,500.

She was flabbergasted — and delighted that she could help Ossian Revitalization, which receives the proceeds from the pie sale.

A consortium of buyers purchased the two pies. The first pie was purchased by Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Ossian, Les Gerber Insurance and BKM Real Estate and Auctioneers. The second pie was purchased by First Bank of Berne, Edward Jones Financial Advisor Larry Smith of Ossian, Emshwiller and Emshwiller of Bluffton, Barkley Builders, Larry and Mic Heckber, Monte and Bonnie Fisher, Energy Control, Steffen Group, and Ossian Do-It Best Hardware.

Auctioneer for this year’s sale was once again Sam Haiflich of BKM.

In an effort to beat last year’s record, Haiflich urged on the bidding reminding the people present for the annual Ossian Revitalization pork chop dinner that Witte’s pies this year were sourced entirely from Wells County. The bidding was hot and heavy on a temperate evening under the big tent and in the end, the old record was scorched.

Witte’s pies have now raised more than $45,000 for Ossian Revitalization.
