At 8:09 p.m. June 19, Bluffton police responded to a residence on a report of a fight. As the investigating officer approached the location of where the fight was supposed to have taken place, they noticed a vehicle that matched the description heading south on Main Street in the opposite direction from the address to which police were responding.
The investigating officer turned his patrol vehicle around and started following the vehicle. It reportedly continued southbound even after the officer turned on the emergency lights of his patrol vehicle.
As other officers joined in following the vehicle, it allegedly continued through a number of city streets west of Main Street including South, Johnson, Riley and Marion streets, before finally coming to a stop in front of a residence on Marion Street. The driver, identified as Maiquitio, reportedly exited the vehicle and started walking away from officers. He was commanded to stop but allegedly failed to do so and started to run. The investigating officer gave chase, telling McDaniel that he was going to be “tased” if he failed to stop running. Other officers arrived at the scene and eventually cut off all further possible routes of escape for McDaniel and he reportedly surrendered but continued to resist officers’ attempts to place him in handcuffs.
McDaniel reportedly told the officer that he had been at a cookout when his wife, Freeman, became angry with him because he would not grill shrimp. She allegedly tried to stab him with a kitchen knife. He allegedly ran to the vehicle, got in and started to drive away, but Freeman allegedly threw two bricks at the vehicle, denting the metal and cracking the rear window.
