CELEBRATING FREEDOM

Whether an American citizen or a short-term visitor to the United States, this weekend offers time to celebrate the gift of freedom instituted in 1776. For more than two centuries, America has been a haven of opportunity and liberation, providing physical relief and safety to thousands of people fleeing oppressive regimes around the world.

In spite of enjoying these wonderful freedoms, not every resident of this great country has found the best liberty of all – deliverance from the consequences of sin through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. The idea that humanity needs saving comes from the Word of God, where we are told the following truths:

1. We have a sin problem. Although we were created in perfection (Genesis 1 & 2), God’s ultimate creation broke their original relationship with the Creator, dooming all of mankind to the same separation. Romans 3:10, 23 and chapter 6:23 clearly declare that “no one is righteous” and “the result (wages) of this sin is death.” We cannot save ourselves.

2. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ. Roman 5:8, 9 reassures us that our original Designer WANTS to have a relationship with us, so much so that He sent his only Son to take the punishment that we deserve (John 3:16, 17). We needed restoration from our less-than-perfect condition, so God reached out to us in love.

3. What should be our response? Unlike the revolution that brought American independence, only one response will reconnect us to God: if we “believe in our heart” and “openly declare that Jesus is Lord,” (Romans 10:9, 10) we are forgiven! Romans 10:13 promises that EVERYONE who comes to God in repentance for their rebellion will be saved and restored to fellowship with Him.

4. Freedom results! Romans 5:1, 2 as well as Romans 8:1, 2 guarantees that turning to God, admitting our sinfulness, and accepting the sacrifice of Jesus brings complete exoneration of our guilt! This one decision carries the promise of eternity in heaven, regardless of when our life may end.

If you have never acknowledged your need for God’s forgiveness, why not make this 4th of July your declaration of freedom from the burden of sin? Your Heavenly Father stands ready to celebrate with you!
