Eight area fire departments joined in the effort to extinguish a chicken barn fire in Jackson Township during early morning hours Wednesday, but the structure was considered a total loss.

firefighters worked through the nighttime hours Wednesday morning to save a structure on the Bruce Herr property, 6620W-900S.

Warren Fire Chief Lee Poulson, whose department was the lead agency, said his department was paged out at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday and firefighters were on the scene until 5 a.m. Poulson said some firefighters were dismissed from the scene about 2 a.m.

Firefighters from Chester Township, Liberty Center, Poneto, Montpelier, Uniondale, Bluffton, and Nottingham joined Warren personnel. The barn, which Poulson said was 400 feet by 120 feet, had chickens in it. Poulson said he was not aware how many there were.

The barn, at 6620W-900S, is owned by Bruce Herr.

While the chicken barn was destroyed, firefighters were able to save a nearby structure, Poulson said.

No cause was given for the fire.
