BHS golf wins ACAC quad
Bluffton’s boys’ golf team took first place in Monday’s ACAC quad match at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
The Tigers shot a 180 as a team and were led by Keegan Schwartz, who also finished as medalist of the match. He shot a 36 over the course’s back 9.
Schwartz was followed on Bluffton by Ephraim Frauhiger at 43, Kade Abbett at 50, Alec Reiff at 51, and Draven Dull at 57.
South Adams shot a 201 and was led by Connor Fear’s 45. Adams Central also shot a 201 with Jayden Sharpe shooting a 45 to lead the team.
Southern Wells came in fourth with a 210.
James Foss shot a 43 for the Raidres’ best score. Following him on Southern Wells were Gabe McElhaney at 49, Clay Smith at 58, and Archer Jones and Tristen Worster each at 60.
The Tigers and Raiders will return to action on Thursday. Bluffton will head to Eastbrook while Southern Wells will host Madison-Grant.
Raiders softball is routed by SA
Southern Wells’ softball team was roughed up at South Adams on Monday, losing 21-2 in five innings.
The Lady Raiders (5-17) totaled eight hits, but managed just one run in the second and one in the fifth.
Meanwhile, the Starfires took an early 4-0 lead after one inning and followed that up with a 12-run second. They added their other five runs in the fourth inning and won the game early by the 10-run rule.
Brittany Costello and Collena Reeves each had two hits to lead the Raiders at the plate. Costello and Grace Michael each hit a double and drove in a run as well.
Maddy Sutton took the loss on the mound for Southern Wells, allowing 16 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings of work. Reeves and Dhapne Gallegos each contributed time on the mound in relief.
The game concluded the Raiders’ regular season. They will enter sectional competition next week with a matchup against Daleville.
Norwell softball loses to Eagles
Norwell’s softball team was shut out 10-0 in Monday’s home game by Columbia City.
The Lady Knights (11-8) managed just one hit in the game. Meanwhile, the Eagles totaled 14.
Columbia City scored two runs in the first inning, which proved to be all it would need for the win. The Eagles added one more in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to win by the 10-run rule.
Norwell will take the field again on Wednesday at home against Woodlan.
Bluffton softball falls at Wes-Del
Bluffton’s softball team traveled to Wes-Del on Thursday and left with a 22-5 loss in five innings.
The Lady Tigers (3-16) trailed 4-2 after two innings, but the host Warriors put up nine runs each in the third and fourth innings to win the game early by the 10-run rule.
Bluffton had eight hits at the plate, with Kayla Kiefer and Tressa Renner each getting two of them.
Pitching duties for Bluffton were split between Lily King and Tyrah Shaw. King allowed 13 runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings to go with six walks and two strikeouts while Shaw allowed nine runs on nine hits in 1 1/3 innings and walked two.
The Tigers also defeated New Haven 11-6 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Shaw struck out four and pitched all seven innings to get the win for the Tigers.
Bluffton had 11 hits at the plate, with King and Marly Drayer each finishing with multi-hit games. King also had a game-high three RBIs.
The Tigers will host Wayne on Tuesday for their next game.
SW baseball team defeated by AC
Southern Wells’ baseball team lost 13-2 to Adams Central in Monday’s home game in five innings.
The Raiders (4-13) struck first in the second inning with a run, but the Jets came up with four runs in the third to take the lead for good. The Raiders put up one more run in the third, but the Jets added one in the fourth and exploded for eight in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule.
Branson Rheinhart picked up the Raiders’ only hit in the game as the team struggled to get any offense going against Adams Central pitcher Braysen Yergler. Yergler threw all five innings and allowed one earned run while striking out six and walking four.
Owen Vickrey suffered the loss for Southern Wells, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work while striking out two and walking none. Rheinhart allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in 1/3 inning in relief.
Southern Wells will travel to Randolph Southern for its next game on Thursday.
VanMeter adds more hits to season total
Josh VanMeter added four hits and a home run to his season total over his last week of games with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
VanMeter had his best game on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 2-for-3 with a home run and triple, two RBIs, and two runs.
VanMeter added two more singles in the Pirates’ series with the Reds over the weekend as well.
Overall though, the Norwell High School graduate has struggled to find consistency at the plate. His batting average sits at .177 with 11 hits, two home runs, four RBIs, and six runs scored.
