SW softball splits DH with Lions

The Southern Wells Lady Raiders split a softball doubleheader on the road with Liberty Christian on Saturday, losing the first game 14-4 and winning the second 6-3. 

The win in that second game snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Raiders (5-16), who started the season with a 4-4 record.

In that second game, Southern Wells broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with two runs. After Liberty Christian responded in the bottom of the inning with one run, Southern Wells added two more for insurance in the seventh to secure the victory. 

The Raiders had 13 hits at the plate. Grace Michael went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Riley Tappy went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs. Brittany Costello, Cheyenne Neuenschwander, and Collena Reeves each added two hits. 

Tappy was the winning pitcher as well, going all seven innings and allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out 10 and walking four. 

In the first game, the Lady Lions got off to a hot start with nine runs in the first. They added three more in the third and then two more in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule. 

The Raiders managed just one run in the first and picked up three more in the fourth. 

Southern Wells had just six hits in this one. Catalina Tucker led the way, going 2-for-2 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Michael added a double and two RBIs, and Neuenschwander hit a double and drove in a run. 

Maddy Sutton was the losing pitcher, allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits in four innings while striking out four and walking two. 

The Raiders head to South Adams on Monday for their next game.

Tigers softball loses to Bulldogs

Bluffton’s softball team fell 10-8 to New Haven in Saturday’s home game. 

With the game tied 4-4 after three innings, New Haven took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth. The visitors added three more in the top of the sixth. 

Bluffton (2-15) was able to close the gap in the bottom of the sixth with four runs of its own, but it was not enough to complete a comeback. 

Both teams had seven hits each. 

Cayah King had two hits and an RBI to lead Bluffton’s bats. Isabella Stout drove in two runs. 

Marly Drayer and Tyrah Shaw each had a double and an RBI. 

The Lady Tigers are back at it on Monday at Wes-Del.

Bluffton baseball falls at Garrett

Bluffton’s baseball team lost 10-0 at Garrett on Saturday in six innings. 

The Tigers (10-9) struggled against Garrett pitcher Luke Holcomb, who threw all six innings and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out 10. Brock Drayer came up with both hits for Bluffton.

Garrett had steady scoring throughout the game with at least one run in each of the first four innings to build a 6-0 lead. 

After a scoreless fifth, the Railroaders put up four runs in the sixth to win by the 10-run rule. 

The Tigers take the diamond again on Monday with a home game against Blackhawk Christian.

Norwell JV softball defeats Oak Hill

Norwell’s JV softball team won 18-8 against Oak Hill on Saturday in five innings. 

Norwell did all of its damage in two innings, scoring 10 runs in the second and eight in the third to win by the 10-run rule. 

The Lady Knights totaled 12 hits, led by Kaydance Clark’s two triples and Alyssa Krinn’s two doubles. Kailey Eccles and Madison Mashuda each added two hits.

Eccles was the winning pitcher. In three innings of work she allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out two. 

Norwell JV tennis wins twice at invite

Norwell’s girls’ tennis team picked up team wins in its home JV Tournament on Saturday. 

The Lady Knights split into two teams and each one picked up a win over Columbia City. 

Norwell A defeated Columbia City 3-2, getting two points in doubles play and one in singles. 

Macy Felger and Becky Sicchiero won No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-3. Ciera Hiester and Lisa Beckman won No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-1. Ella Krug won No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. 

Norwell B defeated Columbia City 5-0. 

Krug won No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1. Emma Roembke won No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. Emma Batdorff won No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-3. 

Marlee Wenger and Isabel Isch won No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-0. Renee Fraze and Taylor Werling won No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0.
