BHS baseball splits DH with Whitko
The Bluffton Tigers split a home baseball doubleheader on Saturday with Whitko, winning the first game 5-4 and losing the second game 11-0.
Kyler Rolston and Brody Lewis took care of pitching duties for Bluffton (8-6) in the first game, with Rolston throwiing four innings and Lewis three. Each had six strikeouts as well.
Whitko scored two runs to start things off in the top of the first, but the Tigers responded with three of their own in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second to lead 4-2. Whitko scored one more run in the third, and both sides each added a run in the fourth.
Drew Pressler had two hits and two RBIs at the plate for Bluffton. Braxton Betancourt and Eli Garrett each added two hits.
In the second game, Whitko again started with two runs in the first inning. The Wildcats did their most damage in the third inning though with five runs. They added four more in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule.
Grant Thompson pitched 2 2/3 innings and threw two strikeouts for Bluffton, and Garrett pitched the other 2 1/3 and struck out three.
Bluffton will head to Churubusco on Monday for its next game.
VanMeter adds 2 hits at end of April
Pittsburgh Pirates utility man Josh VanMeter added two more hits to his season total in the final week of April.
The first hit came April 28 against the Milwaukee Brewers. VanMeter went 1-for-3 in the game with a single.
The second came against the San Diego Padres on April 30. VanMeter went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run.
VanMeter is still struggling to find his groove in the young season. In 35 at-bats he has accumulated six hits (.171 batting average), one home run, and two RBIs.
SW softball team loses to Tri-Village
Southern Wells’ softball team lost 4-3 to Tri-Village in Saturday’s game at Union City.
After two scoreless innings, Tri-Village scored all four of its runs over a three-inning stretch with two in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
After a scoreless sixth, the Lady Raiders (4-11) had one more chance at a comeback in the seventh. They fought back with three runs, but were not able to get one more to force extra innings.
Catalina Tucker and Riley Tappy each drove in runs during that seventh inning.
Tappy took the loss on the mound. She pitched six innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three.
The Raiders will return to the field on Tuesday at Randolph Southern.
Norwell’s Mann wins Canterbury Invite
Norwell’s Augie Mann shot a 69 on Saturday at Chestnut Hills to finish as the individual champion of the Canterbury Invite.
Mann also helped lead the Knights to a tie for fifth place in the team standings with a score of 367.
Following Mann on Norwell were Ethan Ottinger at 91, Derek Smith at 99, Chase Hulvey at 108, and Luke Herrell at 111.
Norwell’s next match will be on Tuesday at home against East Noble.
Norwell JV baseball beats Dwenger twice
Norwell’s JV baseball team defeated Bishop Dwenger twice in Saturday’s doubleheader, winning the first game 9-8 and the second 11-5.
In the first game, Eli Randol had the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. Philip Gaier started on the mound and allowed one earned run in four innings while striking out one and walking two. Korben Neuenschwander pitched two innings and allowed one earned run. Cooper Sloan picked up a save on the mound and drove in three runs.
In the second game, Collin Burns went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run. Randoll went 3-for-3, and Zander Borne had a hit and an RBI.
Adams McBride threw four innings, allowed three earned runs, and struck out three on the mound. Logan Cotton pitched three innings and allowed no earned runs and just one hit.
