Norwell tennis defeats Snider

Norwell’s girls’ tennis team won 5-0 on its home court against Snider on Friday. 

For the Lady Knights (3-0), it was their third shutout of the season. 

Aubreyan Heyerly defeated Emilie Henry 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. McKenna McNabb defeated Anna Smith 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Addy Heyerly defeated Tessa Borton 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles. 

Annabelle Johnson and Mackinzie Toliver defeated Lexi Mathias and Mallory Schumm 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 doubles. Jordyn Xayyachack and Sofia Fernandez defeated Olivia McGillicuddy and Maddie Sirivath 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles. 

Norwell’s JV also won 8-0. 

Brooklynn Pine won No. 1 singles 8-0. Gracie Rinkenberger won No. 2 singles 8-3. Ella Krug won No. 3 singles 8-0. 

Macy Felger and Becky Sicchiero won No. 1 doubles 8-0. Ciera Hiester and Lisa Beckman won No. 2 doubles 8-1. Emma Roembke and Emma Batdorff won No. 3 doubles 6-0. Renee Fraze and Taylor Werling won No. 4 doubles 6-0. Marlee Wenger and Isabel Isch won No. 5 doubles 6-0. 

Norwell will take the court again on Monday at home against Adams Central.

Norwell softball tops Jay County

The Norwell Lady Knights got their first win on the softball field on Friday, defeating Jay County 12-2 in five innings at home. 

Norwell (1-1) started off hot with five runs in the first and two more in the second. Then after two scoreless innings, the Knights exploded for five more runs in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule. 

Norwell had 10 hits at the plate, with Brielle Nunley and Allyson Burtron combining for six hits and seven RBIs. Nunley went 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs. Burtron went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, three RBIs, and a run. 

Hannah Troyer, Sami Lemler, Jordan Markley, and Kirtlynn Lemler each added a hit as well. 

Sami Lemler pitched all five innings on the mound and got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six and walking two.

Norwell will return to the diamond on Saturday at South Adams. 

Lady Tiger tennis wins at Blackford

Bluffton’s girls’ tennis team traveled to Blackford on Friday and left with a 5-0 victory. 

Monroe Heller defeated Sissy McNeal 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Emma Baumgartner defeated Vanessa Carroll 7-5, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Gretchen Crist defeated Anya Uggen 7-5, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. 

Emily Mann and Madi Fenstermaker defeated Emily Ellison and Meeka Stalker 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. Olivia Funk and Cadence Engle defeated Allyson Henderson and Izbela Phillips 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles. 

For the Lady Tigers (1-1), it was their first win of the young season. 

In the only JV matchup, Bluffton’s Ella Wheeler defeated Jaelyn McCaffery 8-0.

Next up for the Tigers is a home match on Monday against Wabash. 

Four county track meet records set

Four meet records were set in Thursday’s Wells County Championship track and field meet. 

Bluffton’s Gus Martinez set a meet record in the long jump at 20 feet, 5 inches and in the 100 meter dash at 11.3 seconds. 

Norwell’s Winston Frauhiger cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump to set a new meet record in that event. 

On the girls’ side, Bluffton’s Lauren Reiff set a record in the discus with a throw of 122 feet.
