NHS softball tops Bellmont
Norwell’s softball team had a strong start and finish in Wednesday’s matchup at Bellmont to win 13-9.
The Lady Knights (5-4) lit up the scoreboard in the first inning for six runs. They matched that total in the sixth inning and added one other run in between in the third inning.
Bellmont did not get on the board until the fourth inning, but scored six runs in the process to trail 7-6 at the time. However, the Braves could only manage three more runs the rest of the game, which all came in the sixth.
Madyson Sonnigsen got the win on the mound for Norwell. She allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work while walking just one.
Sami Lemler pitched the other four innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits while also walking one.
Norwell combined for 15 hits at the plate, with three coming from Delaney Connett. Brielle Nunley, Hannah Troyer, Emma Bailey, and Jordan Markley each added two hits.
Norwell will return to action on Thursday on its home field against Lakewood Park Christian.
Norwell tennis team beats AC
The Norwell Lady Knights defeated Adams Central 4-1 in Wednesday’s home tennis match.
The only point Norwell (7-1) did not get came in No. 2 singles, where Adams Central’s Hillary Tobias defeated McKenna McNabb 6-3, 7-6(4).
In the other two singles matches, Norwell’s Aubreyan Heyerly defeated Jessica Tobias 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, and Addy Heyerly defeated Sydney Leyse 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Annabelle Johnson and Mackinzie Toliver defeated Kellyn Bertsch and Alexa Brotherton 6-1, 6-2, and Jordyn Xayyachack and Sofia Fernandez defeated Maddie Herring and Alayna McCullough 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles.
Norwell won the JV match 9-0.
Hayden Double won No. 1 singles 8-1. Brooklynn Pine won No. 2 singles 8-0. Gracie Rinkenberger won No. 3 singles 8-4. Ella Krug won No. 4 singles 6-3.
Macy Felger and Becky Sicchiero won No. 1 doubles 8-2. Ciera Hiester and Lisa Beckman won No. 2 doubles 8-1. Emma Roembke and Emma Batdorff won No. 3 doubles 6-2. Marlee Wenger and Isabel Isch won No. 4 doubles 6-2. Renee Fraze and Taylor Werling won No. 5 doubles 6-2.
Norwell will be back at it on Thursday with a home match against Bellmont.
Bluffton softball defeated by UC
Bluffton’s softball team lost 16-11 in a high-scoring home game against Union City on Wednesday.
Bluffton (2-7) trailed 15-3 going into the bottom of the fifth and needed at least three runs to prevent a loss by the 10-run rule.
The Lady Tigers were able to come up with four runs to keep things going. After Union City added another run in the sixth, the Tigers came up in the bottom of the seventh trailing 16-7. They added four runs in that inning as well, but came up short of a comeback.
The Tigers had 18 hits at the plate, with Marly Drayer going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Isabella Stout went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs. Kayla Kiefer went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Tyrah Shaw, Tressa Renner, Lily King, and Kaitlyn Tungate each added two hits as well.
On the mound, Shaw and Averi Petty each allowed nine hits. Shaw went four innings and allowed six runs (one earned), while Petty pitched three innings and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) while striking out one and walking six.
Bluffton will take on Woodlan on Thursday in a home game.
Raiders softball falls at Daleville
Southern Wells’ softball team fell 8-6 at Daleville on Wednesday.
The Lady Raiders (4-9) initially trailed 5-0 after two innings, but put up two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to cut the deficit to two runs and scored another in the sixth to trail by just one.
Daleville got some necessary insurance in the sixth though, scoring three runs to move ahead by four runs. The Raiders added two more in the seventh, but ultimately fell short of a comeback.
It marked five straight losses for the Raiders as well.
Southern Wells was not short of hits as it totaled 17 of them. Catalina Tucker went 4-for-5 with a double six RBI’s to lead the Raiders’ bats.
Brittany Costello went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Cheyenne Neuenschwander hit a triple and a double, and Dhapne Gallegos added two hits as well.
Gallegos and Maddy Sutton each pitched six innings on the mound for the Raiders. Sutton allowed five runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one, while Gallegos allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two.
The Raiders travel to Heritage on Thursday for their next game.
Norwell baseball loses late at Leo
Norwell’s baseball team fell behind late at Leo on Tuesday and lost 5-4.
Norwell (7-5) held a 4-1 lead after five innings. However, the Lions rallied in the sixth for four runs to take the lead.
The Knights were unable to tie or take the lead in their final chance in the top of the seventh.
Lane Lewis suffered the loss for Norwell, allowing four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Cade Shelton started and pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Leo’s Kylar Decker pitched a complete game and allowed just three hits, one earned run, and struck out nine while walking none. Luke Graft got two of those hits for Norwell, and Shelton added a double.
Norwell will host Bellmont on Thursday for its next game.
NHS JV softball defeats Bellmont
Norwell’s JV softball team defeated Bellmont 13-3 in five innings by the 10-run rule.
The Lady Knights combined for 11 hits at the plate, with Kailey Eccles and Haley Green each getting two. Leah Werling also drove in three runs.
Eccles was the winning pitcher as well, going all five innings and allowing no earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.
Norwell boys’ golf gets win over HN
Norwell’s boys’ golf team fell 173-187 at Huntington North on Tuesday.
Augie Mann shot a 40 to lead the Knights and finished as medalist of the match. Following him on Norwell were Luke Herrell at 47, Derek Smith and Chase Hulvey each at 50, and Kaden Graft at 53.
Austin Williams shot a 41 for Huntington North’s top score.
Norwell’s JV also lost to Huntington North 196-208. Daniel Simerman shot a 46 to lead the JV Knights, followed by Ethan Ottinger at 47, Davis Miller at 49, Josh Adam at 54, and Owen Wallis at 55.
Non-counting JV scores for Norwell included Zach Herrell at 61, Carson Heister at 65, and Logan Freiburger at 67.
Norwell also had an intersquad match with the remainder of its roster, with Norwell gold defeating Norwell blue 250-266.
Bodie Zimmer shot a 46 to lead gold, followed by Cavin Smithley at 66, Ethan Dalrymple at 68, AJ Renniger at 70, and Cam Collins at 71.
Blue was led by Owen Cupp at 65, followed by Jack Bowling at 66, Karsen Favory at 67, Isaac Harkless at 68, and Alex Baker at 70.
Norwell returns to action on Saturday at the Canterbury Invitational.
Norwell JV baseball loses to Homestead
Norwell’s JV baseball team was defeated 4-1 by Homestead.
Garry Riley started on the mound for Norwell and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Logan Cotton came in relief for the remaining 2 1/3 innings and allowed no runs while walking two and striking out three.
The Knights were unable to get a hit at the plate, but Cotton and Noah Turk each drew a walk.
Bluffton girls’ tennis gets beat by Vikings
Bluffton’s girls’ tennis team lost 4-1 at Huntington North on Wednesday.
Bluffton (2-4) scored its only point in No. 1 singles, where Monroe Heller defeated Mallory Kline 6-1, 6-1.
Huntington North took care of business everywhere else.
Kelsie Ludemann defeated Emma Baumgartner 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles, Kylee Burnau defeated Alexis Grover 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, Morgan Betterly and Avery Bonewitz defeated Emily Mann and Madi Fenstermaker 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles, and Hannah Szelis and Gabby Leichty defeated Cadence Engle and Olivia Funk 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles.
Huntington North won the JV match 8-0 as well.
Next on the Tigers’ schedule is a road match at Wayne on Thursday.
