The Grover Sheets American Legion Post 111 will celebrate the Legion’s 103 birthday on Saturday.
A catered dinner will be held for Post membership at 111 W. Washington St. beginning at 6 p.m.
The guest speaker for the evening will be James L. Daube.
He is a member of American Legion Post 189 in his hometown of Walkerton. Daube served three years in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969 with one year deployment in Vietnam in 1967 to the Phu Lam Signal Installation. He is the Leading Candidate for Indiana Department Commander for the year 2022-2023.
Daube has been heavily involved in multiple levels of American Legion leadership, and currently serves on the national level on the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Council.
Daube and his wife Lois have been married for 30 years and reside on the family farm in Walkerton.
The evening’s agenda also includes recognition of the Post’s “Legionnaire of the Year,” the community’s “Law Officer of the Year,” recognition of members who have earned 50 years of continuous membership, and a presentation with Mayor John Whicker.
“Of interesting note is that the Immediate Past Indiana Department Commander Allen Connelly and the current Indiana Department Commander Mark Gullion (plan to attend),” Adjutant Emeritus Tom Pett said via email. “To have the Immediate Past, Current, and next Indiana Department Commanders in the same room for a social function is extremely unusual.”
