Wells Circuit Court

Criminal Cases

Preliminary plea of not guilty entered for Derek Todd Liebo, 31, Bluffton, charged with arson, a Level 4 felony, and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor. Defendant informed court he wishes to represent himself in the action. Public defender Larry Mock appointed as stand-by counsel.

Liebo is charged with entering the main entrance to Fresenius Kidney Care, 1100S. Main St. at 7:13 a.m. Jan. 4 and then proceeded to the vacant portion of the building, which is the former Wells Community Hospital, and started smashing glass and other items on the first floor. He allegedly ripped down all of the signs pointing to Fresenius and is also alleged to have attempted unsuccessfully to start fires, including one in a closet full of medical supplies.

When responding law enforcement officers questioned Liebo about his actions, he reportedly responded with mostly bizarre statements about shadows and the Holy Spirit.

Liebo did not enter the Fresenius Medical side of the building when he went on his alleged rampage.
