Loren E. ‘Sarge’ Waters, 80

Loren E. “Sarge” Waters, 80, of Markle died at 7:53 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1928 in Wells County to C. Jasper and Edna Marie (Redding) Waters, he married Elizabeth Smith on Sept. 12, 1952 in Springfield, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1967, holding the rank of sergeant. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Bluffton.

Mr. Waters was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church. He had worked as a receiving manager at Sears in Fort Wayne and retired after 20 years of service in 1987.

In addition to the wife, he is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Teresa) Waters of Kernersville, N.C., and Donald (Elizabeth) Waters of Huntington: two daughters, Donna Faye of Markle and E. Marie (Tyler) Kimmel of Markle; a brother, Harold Waters of Bluffton, 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, seven step grandchildren and one step great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son Michael Waters, and a brother, Gerald Waters.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Myers Funeral Home, Markle Chapel with Pastor Kathie Jones officiating. Calling at the funeral home will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Burial will be at Markle Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Markle United Methodist Church.


Arthur H.C. Rutenberg, 92

A native of Huntington County, Arthur H.C. Rutenberg, 92, of Roanoke, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at his home.

Born June 22, 1915 in Huntington County to Christian and Ida (Jahnke) Rutenberg, he married Hannah C. Lucas, who preceded him in death. He was retired from Surge Dairy as an equipment dealer. He was a member of St. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Huntington.

Survivors include a daughter, Chris Johnson of Roanoke, a sister, Marie Rutenberg of Markle and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Elzey Patterson Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian with burial to follow at Hoverstock Cemetery.

Calling at the funeral home will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Preferred memorials are to the Salvation Army or the donor’s choice.


Max A. Harvey, 89

Max A. Harvey, 89, of Warren, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday,  May 15, 2008, at Heritage Pointe in Warren.

Born in Huntington County on Feb. 15, 1919 to Homer E. and Nola M. (Hoover) Harvey, he married Eileen V. Wagner in Grant County on Nov. 17, 1942; she survives.

A 1938 graduate of Jefferson Center High School, Mr. Harvey served in the U.S. Army from January 1941 to October 1945, during World War II. He worked as a plumber with Local #166 Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union in Fort Wayne for over 55 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Van Buren.

Other surviving relatives include three sons, Gordon R. (Kathy) Harvey of Upland, Kent D. (Lisa) Harvey of Marion and Dennis L. (Judy) Harvey of Marion; two daughters, Carolyn S. (James) Eagleson of Middlebury and Teresa (Dave) Pulley of Morgantown; one brother, Marvin (Janice) Harvey of Upland; one sister, Martha L. Robinson of Treaty; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Harvey was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Grover and Marciel Allen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Central Christian Church in Van Buren. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Pointe. Burial is at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, in Marion.

Preferred memorials are to the church building fund. Glancy Funeral Homes H. Brown and Son Chapel in Warren is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence ‘Pete’ Dick, 88
Clarence “Pete” Dick, 88, of Decatur died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 9:50 p.m. at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Bornin Wells County to Carl and Lucy (Aker) Dick Dec. 21, 1919, he married Pauline Mitchell on May 31, 1947 in Nashville. She survives him.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was self-employed, having Monroe Washer Service for 50 years and Dick’s Carpet Cleaning for 25 years. He also worked as a custodian at Adams Central Schools for 13 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church, where he served as usher for over 45 years and on the board of trustees.
Other surviving relatives include two sons, Kevin (Jennifer) Dick of Decatur and Bill Dick of LaQuinta, Calif.; two daughters, Cheryl Johnston of Fort Wayne and Carol Stimson of Buckeye, Ariz.; two sisters, Patty Stanley of Decatur and Jane DeRoo of Decatur; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Merle Dick and one sister, Peggy McBride.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur. Visitation will be Monday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Military graveside services will be conducted at Decatur Cemetery by American Legion Post #43 Color Guard. Rev. Tim Powers will officiate.
Preferred memorials are to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana or Monroe United Methodist Church.

Landen Philip Bailey, 6
Landen Philip Bailey, 6, of rural Markle died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born to Cletus and Jennifer (Ruse) Bailey in Bluffton Nov. 5, 2001.
He was a kindergarten student. He attended United Brethren in Christ Church in Zanesville.
Surviving relatives include his parents; two brothers, Lleyton Bailey and Cohen Bailey and one sister, Mackenzie Sawyer, all at home; maternal grandparents, Gene and Patti Ruse of Bluffton; paternal grandparents Kedric and Clara Bailey of Markle; and great-grandparents, Wilma and Mel Meyer of Markle.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zanesville United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday at the church from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Hoverstock Cemetery. Rev. Tom Datema will officiate. Elzey Patterson Rodak Funeral Homes is handling arrangements.

Patricia ‘Pat’ J. (McKinney) Jesse, 72
Patricia “Pat” J. (McKinney) Jesse, 72, of Ossian, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Center in Fort Wayne.
Born in Bluffton on June 13, 1935 to Willard and Sarah (Dilley) McKinney, she married William F. Jesse; he survives.
A 1953 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mrs. Jesse studied nursing at Parkview Hospital Nurses Training Center. She retired from Wells Community Hospital in 1997, after 25 years  service. She  was an active member of the  First United Methodist Church, Bluffton Eastern Star, Parkview Nurses Alumni Association and the Wells County Foundation.
Other surviving relatives include her mother, now living in Bluffton; two daughters, Jennifer Jesse and Julie (Jason) Brown, both of Ossian; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Jesse was preceded in death by a brother, Michael McKinney.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Bluffton with the Rev. Cindy Osgood and the Rev. Duane Jesse officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Thoma-Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery, in Bluffton.

Lillian L. Moreland, 79
Lillian L. Moreland, 79, of Montpelier died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born to Carl Lewis and Beatrice Elnora (Marsh) Bocock in Huntington County Aug. 1, 1928, she married Chester L. Moreland on Oct. 28, 1944, in Marion. He preceded her in death Feb. 6, 1973.
Mrs. Moreland lived in Mishawaka for 25 years before moving to Marion and then to Montpelier. She attended Marion High School. She was a member of Business and Professional Women (B.P.W.) in Marion and was a caregiver to disabled veterans in Montpelier. She also attended Lakeview Church in Marion.
Surviving relatives include one son, Gary Moreland of Crane Hill, Ala.; one daughter, Sondra Apple of Montpelier; one brother, Ed Bocock of Mount Vernon, Ky.; two sisters, Jo Hartman of Montpelier and Eilene Carter of Marion; and five grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, David Bocock; one sister, Sondra Carpenter; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Glancy Funeral Homes - Walker Chapel in Montpelier. Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Mt. Etna Cemetery in Huntington. Pastor Robert Burcell will officiate.

Frances M. Biery, 89
Frances M. Biery, 89, of Berne died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 7:11 a.m. at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Born to John D. and Alda (Wood) Mason July 24, 1918, in Adams County, she married Thomas Dale Biery on Jan. 5, 1938, in Adams County. He preceded her in death Dec. 26, 1944.
A 1937 graduate of Geneva High School, she worked for the Geneva School Cafeteria from 1952 to 1962. She then worked for CTS for 20 years before retiring in 1984. She attended Domestic Church of Christ.
Surviving relatives include one son, David (Ann) Biery of Fort Wayne and one daughter-in-law, Kay (Biery) Holley (husband, Doug) of Fort Wayne.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Marvin Biery and three brothers, Edgar Mason, John Mason and Theodore Mason.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Swiss Village Retirement Center in Berne. Visitation will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the center. Burial will be at M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne. Pastor Douglas Holley and Chaplain Anita Rediger will officiate.

Ernest L. McBride, 88
Ernest L. McBride, 88, of Huntington, died at 9:40 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Born in East Chicago on March 15, 1920 to Raymond C. and Ottie M. (Curtis) McBride, he married Maro D. Elick in Huntington on May 29, 1958; she survives.
Mr. McBride served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2689 in Huntington. He worked for United Technologies in Fort Wayne as a tool and die maker for 18 years, retiring in 1982. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Moose Lodge #837, both in Huntington.
Other surviving relatives include one son, Steve (Kathy) Rodenberger of Huntington; one daughter, Linda Sue (Steven) Leialoha of Sebring, Fla.; one brother, Marvin McBride of Wabash; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. McBride was preceded in death by one brother, Leslie McBride, one sister, Florence DeWitt, and one great-great-grandson.
Private graveside services will be held at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Huntington County.
Preferred memorials are to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home. Bailey-Love Mortuary in Huntington is in charge of arrangements.

Lee Browning, 76
The father of two Bluffton women, Lee Browning, 76, of Muncie died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born to Raymond Wilford and Rowena Mary (Turpin) Browning June 6, 1931, in New Castle.
A 1949 graduate of Mt. Summit High School, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986. He volunteered at nursing homes, RSVP, the Red Cross and the Marion V.A. Hospital. He also played the organ and piano at Faith Evangelistic Church and other churches.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Thomas Edward (Tonya) Browning of Muncie and Carlton David Browning of Chicago, Ill.; five daughters, Mary Jane Earls of Fort Wayne, Lucille Diane Wallace of Fort Wayne, Sandra Florice Pastore of Bluffton, Fawn Elysse Duncan of Bluffton, and Tina Louise DeVoe of Muncie; one brother, Raymond Frederick (June) Browning of Mt. Summit; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Edward Browning.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington St. Chapel in Muncie. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday after 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Pastor Dale Workman Jr. and Pastor Thurman Moles will officiate.

Sandy Rene-Ann Hess, 22, of Keystone, died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne on Jan. 1, 1986 to Micky E. and Sara E. (Coleman) Hess, she was scheduled to graduate from Bluffton High School this spring.
She was involved with Dream Team softball, Turnstone in Fort Wayne and Bi-County Services in Bluffton.

Robert L. (Bob) Kyle, 75, formerly of Bluffton, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Bluffton to Cletus H. and Roeanna M. (Gilliland) Kyle, he married Roxanne A. Widmer; she survives in Fort Wayne.
A 1950 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mr. Kyle served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked as a custom engineer for IBM for 31 years, retiring in 1987.
Other surviving relatives include two sons, Matthew R. (Cari) Kyle of Fort Wayne and Johnathan W. Kyle of Indianapolis; one daughter, Julie R. (Rick) Kyle-Lee of Mooresville; two brothers, Harold E. (Barb) Kyle of Groveland, Fla. and C. Eugene (Ruthann) Kyle of Gaylord, Mich.; one sister, Elizabeth E. (Paul) Thurston of Riverside, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Dr. James McCrory of Berne; and one grandchild.
Mr. Kyle was preceded in death by a brother, William K. Kyle, and a sister, Doris M. McCrory.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Wanda L. ‘Jackie’ Kelly, 84
Wanda L. “Jackie” Kelly, 84, of Dunkirk, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Blackford County on May 20, 1923 to Joseph E. and Mary K. (Coleman) Bricker, she married Billy Kelly in June, 1943; he survives.
Mrs. Kelly was a former employee of Armstrong Cork in  Dunkirk and Pennville Custom Cabinets.
Other surviving relatives include two sons, William “Bill” (Mariska) Kelly Jr. of Bluffton and Joe Bill (Janet) Kelly of Hartford City; one daughter, Nancy L. (Larry) Beeman of rural Hartford City; one sister, Bonnie Disinger of Dunkirk; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by six sisters.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Pennville Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home. Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the I.O.O.F. Twin Hills Cemetery, in Pennville.

Jesse J. Foreman, 72
Jesse J. Foreman, 72, of Bluffton, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Wells County to Vaughn and Rebecca (Baugh) Foreman on May 14, 1935, he married Beverly J. (Klinger) Foreman March 11, 1978, in Bluffton. She survives him.
He worked for the City of Bluffton for 28 years before retiring in 1997. He also owned his own business, The Go E-Z Shop, in Bluffton for the last 20 years. He attended First Church of the Nazarene.
Other surviving relatives include two sons, Mark (Belinda) Foreman of Bluffton and Bruce (Joanie) Foreman of Pierceton; one brother, Claude (Ruth) Foreman of Ossian; two sisters, Agnes (Virgil) Morningstar of Fort Wayne and Crystal (Ulyess) Boudreaux of Patterson, La.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene Foreman, Ernest Foreman and Albert Foreman; one sister, Violet Foreman; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery. Rev. Larry Sheets and Rev. Gary Klinger will officiate.
Preferred memorials are to the American Kidney Foundation and First Church of the Nazarene.

Harold H. Scheele, 90
Harold H. Scheele, 90, of Markle died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born to Henry F. and Lorenna (Meyer) Scheele March 19, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, he married Bonnetta D. Scheele. She preceded him in death in 1991. He then married Vivian C. (Olson) Pope Scheele. She preceded him in death in 2006.
Mr. Scheele worked at the Kunkle Valve Company in Fort Wayne for 42 years. He also farmed for 40 years in the Woodburn area. He attended the Lutheran Church in Woodburn. He was a Township Corn Husking champion, husking 42 bushels in 80 minutes.
Surviving relatives include one son, Roger L. Scheele of Fort Wayne; one daughter, Reta L. Borchelt of Churubusco; three stepsons, Richard A. Pope of Markle, Wayne E. Pope of Hoagland and Gene L. Pope of Bluffton; one stepdaughter, Violet Veazey of Ossian; two grandchildren; four great-grandchidlren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchidlren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Donald Scheele.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, Markle Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Horeb Cemetery in Uniondale. Rev. Scott Zeckzer will officiate.
Preferred memorials are to the “Worship for Shut-Ins” or the donor’s choice.

Olen L. McIntire, 88
Olen L. McIntire, 88, of Ossian, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Ossian.
Born in Wells County on March 22, 1920 to William E. and Mazie (Tucker) McIntire, he married M. Ellen Adsit in Florida on March 23, 1942; she preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2005.
Mr. McIntire served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Division, Battery C 33rd Field Artillery Battalion. He received a Bronze Star and six Battle Stars. He was a life member of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, and a member of American Legion Post 111. He retired from Navistar International, and was member of Ossian United Methodist Church.  
Surviving relatives include two sons, James (Kathryn) McIntire of Minneapolis, Minn. and Thomas McIntire of Fort Wayne; one daughter, Mona (Lew) Simerman of Ossian, one brother, William (Annabee) McIntire of Montpelier; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. McIntire was also preceded in death by a son, John McIntire, and nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Ossian United Methodist Church. Burial is at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the church. Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Homes in Ossian is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin L. Hilty, 77

The owner of Hilty Cabinet Co, Alvin L. Hilty, 77, of Berne,  died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Adams Memorial Hospital.

Born in Adams County on April 11, 1931 to Chris H. and Lydia (Schwartz) Hilty, he married Fannie Shetler on Nov. 20, 1952; she survives.

Mr. Hilty was the owner of Hilty Cabinet Company and co-owner of Hilty Builder Supply in rural Berne. He was Old Order Amish.

Other surviving relatives include three sons, Ervin (Ruth Ann) Hilty of Monroe, and Milo (Velma) Hilty and Christy (Anna Mae) Hilty, both off Smyrna Mills, Maine; two daughters, Lucynda (Lamar) Hilty of Monroe and Laura (Jerry) Hilty of Berne; five brothers, Samuel, Roman and Marvin Hilty all of Berne, Joe Hilty of Monroe, and Edward Hilty of Red House, Va.; five sisters, Marie (Henry J.) Shetler, Laura (Elmer) Miller and Carol (Lavern) Troyer, all of Berne, Lydiann Yoder of Washington and Anna Mae (Jim) Lengacher of Woodburn; 38 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday, at his residence at 350S 420W, Berne, with Bishop Levi H. Schwartz officiating. Calling hours will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Sunday at his residence. Burial is at Schwartz Cemetery, in Berne.  Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne is in charge of arrangements.



Olen L. McIntire, 88

Olen L. McIntire, 88, of Ossian, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Ossian.

Born in Wells County on March 22, 1920 to William E. and Mazie (Tucker) McIntire, he married M. Ellen Adsit in Florida on March 23, 1942; she preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2005.

Mr. McIntire served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Division, Battery C 33rd Field Artillery Battalion. He received a Bronze Star and six Battle Stars. He was a life member of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, and a member of American Legion Post 111. He retired from Navistar International, and was member of Ossian United Methodist Church.  

Surviving relatives include two sons, James (Kathryn) McIntire of Minneapolis, Minn. and Thomas McIntire of Fort Wayne; one daughter, Mona (Lew) Simerman of Ossian, one brother, William (Annabee) McIntire of Montpelier; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. McIntire was also preceded in death by a son, John McIntire, and nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Ossian United Methodist Church. Burial is at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
