George Henry Dunwiddie, 76
George Henry Dunwiddie, 76, Bluffton, died SaturdaGeorge Henry Dunwiddie, 76, Bluffton, died at 2:32 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne following complications from bypass surgery. He had been ill for two weeks.
Mr. Dunwiddie worked for 33 years at International Harvester. He then worked 13 years as a production supervisor at General Manufacturing, retiring in 2000. A lifelong resident of Wells County, he was educated at Poplar Grove School and Bluffton High School. He was a member of American Legion Post 111 and First Presbyterian Church. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Wells County, to Henry Harrison and Grace O. Dyson Dunwiddie. He married Nancy J. Sowards March 17, 1957, in Bluffton; his wife survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Julie (David) Kaplan of Zionsville, Marcia (Eric) Steffen of Bluffton, and Linda (Mark) Grush of Leo; a son, Mark (Kandace) Dunwiddie of Huntington; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Vera Morehouse of Milford and Elizabeth Meyer of Bluffton; and a brother, Lloyd Dunwiddie of Allegan, Mich.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dunwiddie, and a sister, Lela Dunwiddie.
Calling will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Madsen officiating. Burial will be at the Six Mile Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 111 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.

Louis E. Staak, 84
Louis E. “Lou” Staak, 84, a former executive at Franklin Electric, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Ill.
Mr. Staak was the vice president of manufacturing at Franklin Electric for 11 years and was a 29-year employee of General Electric. He was a graduate of Fort Wayne North Side High School and Purdue University, earning a master of science degree in engineering. He enjoyed traveling, going to more than 100 countries including expeditions to the North Pole, Amazon, Africa, and Antarctica. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Sharon) Staak of Fort Wayne and Edward (Sheri) Staaak of Burr Ridge, Ill.; three grandchildren, Allison Dettore, Emma Staak, and Spencer Staak; and one great-grandchild, Montana Dettore.
His wife, Eileen, preceded him in death in 1997.
Calling will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Richard Pagan officiating. Entombment will be at the Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Marilyn S. Beeler, 54
A sister of two Ossian residents, Marilyn S. Beeler, 54, Geneva, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Adams County on March 4, 1954 to Delbert G. and Treva (Dailey) Yoss, she married William Beeler on July 1, 1973 in Geneva; he survives.
Other survivors include the father of Geneva; two daughters, Christina Coblentz of Waco, Texas and Jessica Beeler of Geneva; a son, David Beeler of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Carol (Richard) Teeple of Ossian; and two brothers, Ronald (Jackie) Yoss of Ossian and Delbert Yoss of Galliano, La. She was preceded in death by her mother and a son, William Beeler.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Downing & Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva. Calling hours there are Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday for two hours prior to the service. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Geneva.
Ruth E. Dynes, 94
A former resident of Bluffton, Ruth E. Dynes, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the Chalet Village Health Care Center in Berne.
Born in Adams County on Oct. 16, 1914 to Adollph and Lydia (Myers) Reinhard, she married Lawrence H. Dynes on Sept. 18, 1953 in Jay Co.; he died Oct. 3, 1996.
Survivors include two stepsons, Richard Dynes of Geneva and Ronald Dynes of Monroe.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Henry, Harry, Carl and Arnold Reinhard, and four sisters, Alice and Mary Reinhard, Esther Lehman and Grace Nussbaum.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva. Calling hours there are for two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Geneva.
Ida Louise Reed, 83
Ida Louise Reed, 83, Bluffton, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at the Meadowvale Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Huntington, to Everett E. and Rosie M. Flaugh Koughn. She married Max E. Reed; her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sisters, Betty L. (Robert L.) Johnson of Uniondale and Berniece Moore and Ellen Fisher, both of Huntington; two brothers, Everette E. Koughn Jr. of Andrews and Fred Koughn of Washington state; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Healey.
Calling will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, Ossian. Services will be held at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ossian.

Helen J. Lipkey, 87
Helen J. Lipkey, 87, of Uniondale, died Thursday Jan. 1, 2009.
Mrs. Lipkey was born in Wells County on June 5, 1921 to Charles Kumfer and Alena (Faus) Parker. She married C. Clifford Lipkey, who preceded her in death.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Rebecca Swoverland of Fort Wayne, Catherine (Tom) Fisher of Uniondale and Kay (Jack) Desjardins of New Haven; one sister, Vada Welbaum of Ossian; five grandchildren, six step grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lipkey was also preceded in death by one son, James Lipkey.
A public graveside service will be held at 12 noon Monday at Horeb Cemetery.

Martha Jane Clouse, 91
Martha Jane Clouse, 91, of Warren, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Heritage Pointe.
Mrs. Clouse was born in Van Buren on June 12, 1917 to Orvis and Edna (Powers) Breedlove. She married John P. Clouse in Warren on Jan. 2, 1936; he preceded her in death on June 5, 2001.
Surviving relatives include one son, Jack (Evelyn) Clouse of Muncie; one daughter, Jill (Gerald) Clark of State College, Pa.; one brother, Phillip Breedlove; three sisters, Barbara Campbell, Betty Lytle and Rebecca Briggs; and four grandchildren
Mrs. Clouse was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Helen Huffman; and two brothers, Jim and Franklin Breedlove.

Judith L. Frauhiger, 61
The sister of a Craigville resident, Judith L. Frauhiger, 61, of Decatur, died Wednesday Dec. 31, 2008 at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Mrs. Frauhiger was born in Decatur on March 30, 1947 to Harry and Bernice (Hannie) Frauhiger.
She is survived by her mother, Bernice Frauhiger of Decatur; six brothers, Bob Frauhiger of Hilton Head, S.C., Fred (Nancy) Frauhiger of Carmel, Gary (Carol) Frauhiger and Phil, (Linda) Frauhiger both of Fort Wayne, Stan (Lou) Frauhiger of Decatur and Bill Frauhiger of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Carolyn (Bill) Gerber of Craigville, Barbara Weiss of Carmel and Mary Jo Frauhiger of Decatur.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Eagles Lodge in Decatur. She worked for 15 years as a machine operator for Paramount Tube in Fort Wayne.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday at the Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, immediately following the calling at the funeral home. Officiating will be Michael and William Gerber.

Naomi Mae Pickle, 78
Naomi Mae Newman Pickle, 78, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Meadowvale Health and Rehabilitation Center. She had been a resident of Meadowvale for the past three years.
Mrs. Pickle was a homemaker and also worked several years at Pretzels Inc., retiring in 1971. She lived in Wells County for more than 50 years.
She was born July 13, 1930, in Wythe County, Va., to James Mitchel Newman and Loretta Mae Shelton. She married Walter W. Pickle Aug. 13, 1955, in Bristol, Tenn. Her husband died Feb. 26, 2006.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. David (Vernie) Campbell of Loveland, Colo; a son, Joseph C. Havens of Fremont, Ohio; two grandchildren; a sister, Rosamond Dallas of Newville, Pa.; and a brother, Henry Newman of Bluffton.
Private family funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Wayne Ball. There will be no public calling hours or services.

A sister of a Montpelier woman, Betty P. Hite, 84, Auburn, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 in Auburn.
She was born in Bluffton to Wilsie and Edith Herring and was the owner-operator of Towers Beauty Salon in Fort Wayne for 20 years, retiring in 1981.
She is survived by two sons, a daughter, three sisters including Judy Padgett of Montpelier, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Burl Hite and two sisters.
Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. Calling hours are Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, and Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jean L. Moore, 67, Hartford City, died at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 at her daiughter’s residence in Montpelier.
Born June 20, 1941 in Wabash to Roy and Beatrice (Brindel) Hippensteel, she attended the First Baptist Church in Montpelier and worked at Richards Restaurant in Hartford City and at Taylor University.
Survivors include three daughters, Angela (Bill) Semon of Warren, Amy (John) Pontius of Montpelier, and Ann (Karl) Moyer of Anderson; a sister, Joyce Holmes of Peru; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Moore, her twin sister, Jane George, and a grandchild.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Walker & Glancy Funeral Home in Montpelier. Calling hours there are from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and for one hour prior to the services Saturday. A music director at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Montpelier, Harry E. (Ed) Suman, 59, Bryant, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Michele; a daughter; two sons; two brothers; three sisters; and three grandchildren.
There will be a prayer service at 9:20 a.m. Friday at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur. Calling hours are Thursday from noon until 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carol Sue Austin, 68
Carol Sue Austin, 68, Bluffton, died at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Austin worked for 29 years as a registered nurse at the Caylor-Nickel Medical Center. She was a 1983 graduate of the Purdue School of Nursing. She was a 1958 graduate of Dunkirk High School and was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, where she served on the board of trustees and was active in other activities.
She was born July 19, 1940, in Jay County, to Carl M. and Laura Sue Powell Hartman. She married Kenneth M. Austin April 10, 1960, in Redkey; her husband survives.
Also suviving are a son, Rev. Stephen (Sherry) Austin of Pendleton; four daughters, C. Marie (Tom) Nunley of Ossian and Sarah (Alan) Shupert, Rebecca Joyce Mygrant, and Rachel (Randy) Grover, all of Bluffton; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl L. Hartman of Dunkirk and Merrill P. Hartman of South Dakota; and a sister, Martha (George) Campbell of Albany.
She and her brother, Carl, were the first set of twins born at the Jay County Hospital.
Calling will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Dick Frederick and Tony Garton officiating. Burial will be at the Six Mile Cemetery.
Pauline Wilkerson, 77
Pauline Wilkerson, 77, Bluffton, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Bluffton.
Mrs. Wilkerson retired in 1999 as a homemaker for the Dupont family in Bozman, Md., where she was employed for more than 22 years. She was a member of the Salvation Army and Home League for the Salvation Army, both in Huntington.
She was born July 18, 1931, in Huntington County, to Ira and Ruth Nunemaker Walters. She married Richard E. Wilkerson April 15, 1950; her husband died Dec. 19, 1996.
Survivors include seven sons, Kenneth (Linda) Wilkerson of Flowery Branch, Ga., Richard (Delila) Wilkerson Jr. of Greensboro, S.C., Eldo (Debbie) Wilkerson of Huntington, Tony Wilkerson of College Park, Md., and Alan Wilkerson, Patrick Wilkerson, and Kevin Wilkerson, all of Parker, Colo.; four daughters, Sharon Helms of Bluffton, Diana Meyers of Fort Wayne, Nadine (Eric) Wilkerson of Seaford, Del., and Connie (Rick) Wilkerson of Woodside, Del.; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ronald (Kathy) Walters of Wabash, Eugene (June) Walters of Kansas, and Gary (Cheryl) Walters of Texas; and two sisters, Florence Crago of Warren and Helen Simmons of Huntington.
She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Wilkerson; six brothers, Jason Lewis Walters, Jerry Lee Walters, Donald Walters, Robert Walters, Jack Walters, and Terry Walters; and four sisters, Margaret Henline, Beatrice Richley, Geraldine Stephens, and Rosemary Walters.

Jean A. Moore, 56, of Bluffton, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at the Meadowvale Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Miss Moore was born Nov. 9, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio, to William H. and Hazel R. (Tewell) Moore. She attended Bi-County Services for more than 20 years.
Surviving relatives include her mother, of Bluffton, and four brothers, Thomas Moore of Bluffton, Michael (Jeanette) Moore of rural Warren, Francis (Sherry) Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and Joe Moore of Glasgow, Ky.
Miss Moore was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Moore.

Gene L. Meyer, 78
A lifetime resident of Wells County who was also a past citizen of the year, Gene L. Meyer, 78, of Bluffton, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Meyer graduated from Bluffton High School in 1948 and later graduated from Purdue University as a mechanical engineer. He served in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps for two years in Washington, D.C., and afterward worked at Bluffton’s Franklin Electric for 41 years.
Wells County honored Mr. Meyer in 2000 as its citizen of the year for playing an instrumental role in the construction of the new Bluffton High School. Mr. Meyer served on the Bluffton-Harrison School Board for 20 years and was on the board of the I.C.E. program. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the council for ministry, and he was also a member of the John Purdue Club.
Born Feb. 12, 1930, in Bluffton to the late Alvie W. and Marguerite (Myers) Meyer, his marriage on Oct. 23, 1971, in Fort Wayne was to Jane A. Hench, who survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Nicole Meyer-Sprankles of Bluffton, and Margaux (Theodore) Johnson of Fort Wayne; a brother, James K. Meyer of Tipton; and three grandchildren.
Calling hours are today from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Bluffton with the Rev. Cindy Osgood officiating.

Mary C. (Krock) Rogers, 69
Mary C. (Krock) Rogers, 69, of Yoder, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Bluffton on Aug. 3, 1939 to Aloysious and Thelma Krock. She was an administrative assistant at Concordia Theological Seminary for 15 years, and a member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Ossian.
Surviving relatives include one daughter, Kimberly (Stanley) Klepper of Yoder; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rogers was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Rogers; and one brother, Richard Anderson.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Ossian. Calling hours will be from two hours prior to the service at the church. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery, in Bluffton.

The mother of a Bluffton resident, Emma S. WeaverSchwartz, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at her daughter’s residence in Vevay.
Mrs. Schwartz was born in Applecreek, Ohio on April 26, 1924 to Simon L. and Sarah R. (Hershberger) Yoder. She married Atlee A. Weaver on Aug. 19, 1954; he preceded her in death on April 23, 1964. She married Joseph R. Schwartz on Dec. 14, 1969; he preceded her in death on April 13, 2004.
Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the Old Order Amish.
Surviving relatives include five children, Marvin (Mary) Weaver of Quincy, Mich., Anna (Jerry) Wickey of Vevay, Eli (Katie) Weaver of Bluffton, Mattie (Jerry) Girod of Berne and Sovilla (Daniel) Schwartz of Monroe; nine step children, Levi (Margaret) Schwartz of Monroe, Enos (Emma) Schwartz of Monroe, Rosie (Abe) Yoder of Geneva, Peter (Elizabeth) Schwartz of Monroe; Noah (Josephine) Schwartz of Monroe, Emma (Cletus) Christner of Vevay, Melvin (Salome) Schwartz of Monroe, Samuel (Rosie) Schwartz of Monroe and Elizabeth (Ben) Eicher of Geneva; one brother, John S. Yoder of Middlefield, Ohio; one sister, Sarah Mast of Shreve, Ohio; 44 grandchildren, 71 step grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren; 169 step great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Schwartz was also preceded in death by one step son, Johnny Schwartz; five brothers; five sisters; five grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, at the Eli Weaver residence in rural Bluffton. Calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Weaver residence. Burial is at the Schwartz Cemetery.

Donald G. Scott, 91
The founder of Scott’s Food Stores, Donald G. Scott, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Scott was born in Galveston, and married Marjorie Hutchens in 1939; she preceded him in death in 1978. He married Rose Betts in 1980; she survives.
He founded Scott’s Food Stores in 1954, building the company into northeast Indiana’s largest food retailer before retiring in 1996. He had 18 stores and 4,300 associates. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from the University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne. He was inducted into the Greater Fort Wayne Business hall of fame in 1996, and appointed Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Orr. He served on the Indiana State Egg Board for 15 years and was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church.
Other surviving relatives include two daughters, Cheryl Scott (Tina Taviano) and Lee Scott; three step daughters, Joan (Gary) McVoy of Fort Wayne, Linda (Tony) DeBenedetto of Jacksonville, Fla. and Dianne Peterson of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren six step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. Calling hours will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the D.O. McComb and Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home in Fort Wayne and from one hour prior to the service at the church. Private burial is at Lindenwood Cemetery.

Naomi Mae (Newman) Pickle, 78, of Bluffton, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008 at Meadowvale Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bluffton. Rites are pending with the Thoma/Rich, Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home.
Albert W. Meyer, 85
Albert W. Meyer, 85, Bluffton, a former Wells County Commissioner, died Friday, Dec. 26, at Christian Care in Bluffton.
Mr. Meyer served as County Commissioner from 1969-76 and again from 1985-92. He was a farmer and was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian.
He was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Wells County, to William and Emma Witte Meyer. He married Geraldine Scheumann Oct. 27, 1945; his wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Lloyd (Joellen) Meyer of Ossian and Dale (Marcia) Meyer of Bluffton; two daughters, Carol (Dennis) Buuck and Phyllis (Scott) Kenline, both of Lafayette; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eldora (Richard) Schuemann of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Aldine Conrad.
Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elzey Patterson Rodak Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian. Services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the church building fund or to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.
Dorothy E. Fischer, 82
Dorothy E. Fischer, 82, of Roanoke, Ill., and formerly of Bluffton, died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.
Mrs. Fischer was born June 25, 1926, in Buckley, Ill., to Theodore and Bertha Hograve Ennen. She married Richard Fischer in Buckley on June 5, 1954; he survives.
Mrs. Fischer was a homemaker.
Other surviving relatives include two daughters, Shirley (Steve) Willard of Dewey, Ill., and Sonya Buchanan of Charleston, Ill.; one son, Steve (Joyce) Fischer of Bluffton; two sisters, Betty (Russell) Plath of Buckley, Ill., and Lois (Warren) Gustafson of Rantoul, Ill., and nine grandchildren.
Mrs. Fischer was also preceded in death by one infant son, Samuel Fischer, and two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Apostolic Christian Church in Roanoke, Ill. Calling hours will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke, Ill. The Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.
