A new ordinance will add fees for damage to county roads beginning Feb. 1.
The Wells County Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance, which had been brought to them in October by Highway Supervisor Shawn Bonar. Previously, the county was responsible for the cost of any damages to county roads caused by private construction.
The ordinance also implements new permits and outlines a fee structure for requests for stone or fill dirt; the county used to absorb both costs. Permits will be required for any work done in the right of way.
Bonar said the fee structure was based on the approximate cost to the county for those materials. It outlines the following fines:
• $520 per single cut on pavement, $350 per additional load needed
• $320 per single cut on a gravel road, $350 per additional load needed
• $50 for a highway permit, $350 per load of stone and $150 per load of fill dirt
• $50 for a right-of-way cut permit; inspection is required, $50 during business hours and $150 outside of business hours
