The aftereffects of the April 30-May 1 flooding in City Hall continue to affect operations in the building.
The clerk-treasurer’s office has been forced to relocate to the first-floor meeting room, which is where the city’s Board of Public Works and Safety usually meets, while repair work is being done in the office in the northeast corner of the building. While operations had returned to the office except for Clerk-Treasurer Tami Runyon’s private office, it’s been decided to instead close off that space entirely for the time being.
No timetable has been set for repairs to be competed. Mayor John Whicker said last week that insurance estimators put the amount of damage to the building at $38,000, a total that does not include anything to the building’s contents.
A heavy rain over the April 30-May 1 weekend damaged City Hall when a soft drink cup plugged a drain in the roof. The problem was not discovered until Sunday afternoon when a cleaning crew found water standing in Whicker’s office and even more extensive damage to Runyon’s office.
Both Whicker’s and Runyon’s offices are against the building’s east wall.
Some of the rooms on the building’s second floor, also against the east wall, were damaged by water held back by the clogged drain.
Since the first-floor meeting room is being used for the clerk-treasurer’s office, the Board of Works will meet in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall until the repair work is completed.
