Interview with Sarah Bueter, freshman at Bluffton High School.
How old are you?
I’m 14.
What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
Probably the funniest thing is in my dance class we were all laughing over random stuff.
Haha. So one of those times where you just can’t quit laughing?
Yes.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?
I really want to go to the Bahamas. It’s warm and I really like warm. I hate the cold. I just think by pictures it looks like a really cool place to visit.
Alright. Good!
You have found a suitcase containing $1 million. The authorities say it’s yours to keep. What do you do with it?
I would probably put a good chunk of it towards college and in savings. Then I would probably do something fun and crazy.
Good for you! Great ideas.
Tell me something about a parent or relative that you find awesome and you hope to accomplish someday?
My mom has a really steady job and she works really hard to get where she is. I just want to have a good job and be able to do things with my family when I grow up.
Nice.
What are you proudest of?
I’m proud of my academic accomplishments. I dance. I’ve been dancing for 10 years and that’s a big accomplishment to a lot of people.
That’s awesome. So you were 4 when you started dancing?
Yes.
What do you wish that you knew how to do that you can’t right now?
There’s so many things. This is a weird one, but I wish I knew how to juggle. I really want to learn how to juggle.
Have you practiced?
I’m too clumsy to juggle. My hands are not that precise.
[Laughing] Ok.
Do you own a pet?
Yes. I have a Beagle-Lab named Robbie. He is very cute.
How did Robbie get his name?
We actually bought him from the shelter. I hated dogs. I did not want one, but my brothers really wanted one. So we went to the shelter and he already had his name from his owner. His owner’s wife had cancer or something really bad so we rescued him and brought him home. So we just left his name Robbie.
That’s a great story. Now do you like dogs?
Yes. He’s my best friend.
Awesome!
Can you tell me a joke?
My friend actually just told me this one. If money doesn’t grow on trees then why are banks called branches?
Good point! I like that!
What’s your favorite class in school and why?
I am a math person. I love math. I’m not an English person. Definitely on the math side.
Do you have a favorite type of math that you like best?
Not really. I really enjoy geometry.
That’s great!
Are you involved in school sports, music or other activities?
I am in marching band. Pep band, concert band. My dad’s the band director.
[Laughing] Here at Bluffton?
Yes. I actually just started Tiger Dance, which is this fundraising that we do here. I’m not in any sports because I’m also dancing outside of school.
So what instrument do you play?
I play flute. Then in marching band I’m in guard.
Very good. You do a lot.
Outside of school activities?
I dance at the Creative Arts Council. Takes up a big chunk of time. I’ve only done ballet for the past 9 or 10 years, but in Tiger Dance I’m doing lyrical and jazz.
OK. Cool!
Do you think it’s important to speak and understand other languages?
I think it depends on the lifestyle that you want to lead. Obviously if you want to travel you would most likely need to understand some of the languages. I took Spanish last semester and I loved it. I went to Mexico last summer and it was kind of fun because everyone around you is speaking a different language and I could kind of pick up on a few words. If you are not going to travel it may not be that important, but I travel a lot so I think it’s important.
Any favorite place you have been?
Eight years ago we went to Hawaii on a band trip and Hawaii is a great place. I loved Hawaii.
Awesome.
What is your favorite game to play and why?
My favorite game is called Quixx and it’s a dice game. You have six dice and you have to roll them all at once. There’s four colored dice and two white dice. You have to match up and like lock your rows and mark off the numbers you get. It takes a lot of brain power to play the game.
Which you like because math is involved in the game right?
Yes.
Who is one of your friends that makes you laugh all the time?
I’d say Mallory. She makes me laugh a lot. It’s just the way she talks. She always throws comedy in with her jokes and stuff.
Cool.
Who is your most academically inclined friend?
I have a lot of really smart friends. I would say probably Mallory again. We are always texting each other on ‘how do you do this’ on the homework. We are always trying to push to get good grades.
Good for you guys!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how will you get there?
That’s a long way a ways. In 10 years I’d probably been out of college for a couple years. Starting to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Kind of planning out the rest of my life. I’m thinking about interior design or teaching.
Those are both great things to go for. Sounds like you are going to have a great future and you are going to do a lot of travelling. Sounds like you have some good plans!
