Interview with Storm Brown, junior at Southern Wells High School.

How old are you?

I’m 16.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?

We went to Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina this summer. We had all the cousins go. It was so fun when we went crab hunting because one night we decided to fill a big sand bucket full of crabs. We ended up having 20 crabs by the end of the night. My one cousin thought if she ran fast enough, she could step on them without getting pinched and she was able to do it.

So you were all watching and laughing?

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go and why?

I would love to travel to Italy because I really want to see the streets. I love the architecture they have. It is so unique and I love that the streets light up at night.

Nice! Any particular city?

Honestly, if I can visit as much as I can, I’d go anywhere.

You have found a suitcase containing $1 million. The authorities say it’s yours to keep. What do you do with it?

Definitely I would give some away, and I probably would give it to families in the community that needed it.

That is so nice. You wouldn’t keep any of it?

No. I make do with what I got.

Impressive. I would maybe at least want a new wardrobe. Ha ha.

I recently did a paper in my English class. I had to pick a topic that is a world issue so I picked poverty in Brazil. If I can give money out and help any family that truly needed it, I would.

Very cool!

Tell me something about a parent or relative that you find awesome and you hope to accomplish someday.

My mother. She recently just got a new job at Parkview Huntington and she now works a little bit later at night, so we all kind of help around the house. She did it so she could be happier and strive a little bit higher than what she was doing before.

Good, so you really look up to her accomplishments.

What are you proudest of?

I think I’m proudest of the person I have become. I recently became a member of the National Honor Society.

Wow! Good for you!

What do you wish that you knew how to do that you can’t right now?

I wish I knew how to play the acoustic guitar because they sound so peaceful. I wish I knew how to strum the strings because it sounds amazing.

Do you own a pet?

Yes, I do. His name is Max, and we had gotten him this last February. He is a labrador retriever.

I love labs. Did you get him as a puppy?

Yes, a chocolate puppy.

Does he chew stuff up?

He loves our sleeves and our robes.

Oh! Give him two and a half years and he will be the best dog ever. We have a lab too.

Can you tell me a joke?

My teachers tell me I will never amount to much because I procrastinate so much. I said, ‘Just you wait!’

Great joke!

What is your favorite class in school and why?

I think currently my favorite class would be Current Issues because of the teacher. He makes it so much fun. We have this article that we read each week and we go over and analyze it. Today we had a ‘What’s in the News’ slide, and it was really cool because some things I hadn’t heard yet had happened, like the fire in California. Then we have a CNN10 each day, and it’s really cool to learn about the things you didn’t know before.

Are you involved in school sports, music or other activities?

Yes. I play volleyball. I manage high school boys’ basketball. I’m in Student Council, Sunshine and I’m a member of the National Honor Society.

You are in lots of stuff! Good for you!

How about outside of school activities?

I work. A lot of them are Norwell people.

That’s nice that you get to meet students from other schools.

Do you think it’s important to speak and understand other languages?

I think it’s important because if you would imagine going over to that certain country and you don’t know anything about it, it’s going to be super difficult. If you expand your horizons and try to learn the language, it’s helpful. I’m in Spanish 3 right now. I think it is so interesting to learn all the different meanings to say things. I like going up to my friends and joke with them about what different words mean. I think in most jobs these days, a second language is so helpful.

What is your favorite game to play and why?

Charades at family gatherings is the best game. Seeing all of the cousins act it out and trying to guess what it is; it’s amazing.

Makes you laugh doesn’t it?

Uh huh.

Who is one of your friend’s that makes you laugh all the time?

My friend Madison is one of my best friends. Each day we sit out in our cars right before school. We look through our windows and make really funny faces at each other. Each day we always find something new to talk about and so we giggle all the way up to the school. I love it. I enjoy going over to her house a bunch when I can.

That sounds like a really great start to your day.

Who is your most academically-inclined friend?

I would say my friend Felicity. She currently is trying to learn Korean and graduate early so that she can go over to South Korea and study abroad there.

That’s amazing!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how will you get there?

In ten years I see myself having already graduated from college and having become a cognitive behavioral therapist. I hope that I have a dating life [laughing] and someone to come home to every night. I hope that I have a bunch of patients that I can help day in and day out and learn about the different disorders so that I can help them.

Nice. What is the difference between a counselor and a cognitive behavioral therapist?

From what I’ve researched, a regular counselor can help between more basic things versus a cognitive behavioral therapist, which focuses purely on disorders like OCD, depression, anxiety.

Awesome. It sounds like you know where you are headed and what you want to do. Congratulations on your National Honor Society achievement. So much to be proud of!
