Interview with Kendell Dettmer, 2019 graduate of Norwell High School.

How old are you?

I’m 18.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?

Last night at work we found a pitch fork in my co-workers car and we drew a devil on it and taped it to my boss’ desk.

What did your boss say when she saw it?

She thought it was really funny. She’s also my Aunt.

So she took it well. That’s funny.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go and why?

I would go to London. I have always wanted to go there. It’s always been on my to do list.

Anything in particular there you want to see or do?

Everything.

You have found a suitcase containing $1 million. The authorities say it’s yours to keep. What do you do with it?

First I would give my parents a vacation. They have 5 kids so they never get a vacation. Then pay for college. I’ve got 11 years ahead of me.

Wow! What are you going to college for?

To be a dentist.

Good for you!

Tell me something about a parent or relative that you find awesome and you hope to accomplish someday?

I think my mom is pretty cool. She works full-time and has all of us kids to take care of. She always makes time for us. She always puts us first and I really appreciate that.

That is a very good thing. That’s nice.

What are you proudest of?

At my very last dance competition our studio won the best studio of the entire competition. It was a really good achievement for me.

Great! What type of dance?

Pretty much all of it.

What do you wish that you knew how to do that you can’t right now?

I wish I knew how to study better. I have a really hard time studying and I wish I was able to pick stuff up easier.

Do you own a pet?

Yes. I have like a billion cats at my house.

Are they all outdoor?

Yes. Barn cats.

Did you name any of them?

We have a couple named. We have Moonlight, Luna, Thor. I think there is one named cuddles. I don’t name them. My siblings name them.

Can you tell me a joke?

Oh no. I’m bad at jokes. Ummm… I can only think of the most generic jokes, but I guess we’ll go for it.

Knock, knock.

Who’s there?

Orange.

Orange who?

Knock, knock.

Who’s there?

Orange you glad I didn’t say Knock, knock again?

[Laughing] Yep, I’ve heard that one before, but always a good one!

What is your favorite class in school and why?

My favorite class that I took at Norwell was the Work Based Learning. It was my favorite because I could go out and actually do something. I intern at a dentist’s office so I was able to gain experience I can use in my future.

That’s great.

Are you involved in school sports, music or other activities?

I was on the dance team all 4 years of high school. I also danced at the studio for 15 years. I previously played soccer for a year.

Do you think it’s important to speak and understand other languages?

I would say yes because in America there are Spanish people and people from other countries and if you don’t know the language you aren’t able to communicate with them.

Is there a language you want to learn?

Spanish. I took 3 years in high school.

What is your favorite game to play and why?

I like playing Clue. That’s my favorite game. I like that every time it’s different. I like detective games, movies and the books.

Who is one of your friends that make you laugh all the time?

My best friend, Lizzie always makes me laugh. She knows me so well and she knows what makes me happy and makes me laugh.

Who is your most academically inclined friend?

There are so many. I would say probably Ashley.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how will you get there?

In 10 years I will still be in college. I just have to push myself through it because I know it will be hard. It will be worth it in the end. I’m hoping by then I will have a spot in a dentist office or at least an internship. In 10 years I will be 28 so maybe be married, maybe have a kid. I don’t know.

You have a really good future ahead of you. A dentist! I know you will have many successes.
