Linden Barcus

Interview with Linden Barcus, Senior at Southern Wells High School.

How old are you?
I’m 18.

Do you like your name?
Yes, kind of. It’s a little out of the ordinary I think. I haven’t heard of too many other people who have the same name as me.

If you had to change your name what would it be?
I’m not really sure. It would probably be something that starts with a W. I like most of those names. Willa or Winifred or something like that.

So you like some of the older, more classic names.
Yes.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
Just before Christmas break the Junior High Student Council here was selling candy cane grams. You could buy a candy cane and send it to someone like a significant other or friend or something. A bunch of my friends bought me like 20 candy canes and sent them to me as a secret admirer.

That’s kind of sweet. How did you find out whom had sent them?
I found out because they spelled admirer wrong. I pointed it out and one of them was like ‘Oh, gosh. I can’t believe I did that.’

Sounds like you guys have fun together.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
I’d probably choose Ireland or Scotland. It’s really pretty and I wouldn’t have to learn another language to go there.

Is there a particular city that you like or what is it that you like about those places?
Not really a particular place, but I really like all the old buildings and castles and stuff.

You have found a suitcase containing $1 million. The authorities say it’s yours to keep. What do you do with it?
I’d probably put it towards school and then whatever else is left I would probably work on getting a house and getting started in life.

Tell me something about a parent or relative that you find awesome and you hope to accomplish someday?
My mom went on a mission trip to India when I was really little. I think that’s pretty cool. I’m not sure I would want to go to India particularly, but I would like to eventually build up the courage to go on a trip to another country.

What are you proudest of?
I spend a lot of time working on academics. I’m kind of happy that I have because it’s gotten me to places I wouldn’t have been if I didn’t.

Great! Do you have any scholarships coming?
I have a conference in February for scholarships.

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?
My favorite color is green so it would be a green.

Do you have a favorite shade of green?
Typically, darker colors is what I like. I like just the regular green.

Do you own a pet? What are their names?
Yes. I own several pets. We have 3 cats and 3 dogs. I have a lizard and my brother has a lizard. My cats are named Mandy, Winifred and Xur. Our dogs are named Ruby, Boaz and Stella. My lizard’s name is Juliet. My brother’s lizard’s name is Rex. We used to have a lot of kittens so we would always choose one kitten that we wanted to name. Everyone got to name a kitten. So Winifred is my cat because I like that name. Xur is my little brother’s cat and Mandy is our oldest cat. She’s named after Mandarin oranges because she’s orange.

How did Juliet get her name?
I was going to name her Julius because it was July. It turned out to be a girl so I changed it to the girl form of Julius.

Can you tell me a joke?
Why are graveyards so noisy?

I have no idea for that.
Because of all the coffin (coughin’).

That’s good! That’s a totally new one.

What is your favorite class in school and why?
My favorite class is probably art. I’ve always liked art so those are usually the classes I enjoy the most.

Are you good at art?
I guess. I’m not always super proud of my work, but other people seem to like it. I prefer drawing just because I am not quite as good with working with 3D stiff. Sculpture and clay aren’t really what I’m best at.

Are you involved in school sports, music or other activities? Any outside of school activities?
I’m involved in clubs. I’m a member of the Sunshine Society here and the Spanish Club. I’m in National Honor Society. I’m on the student leadership team at my church. Other than that I mostly just have hobbies.

What does the Sunshine Club do?
It’s an all girls club. We do kind of like community service stuff. We bake caramel brownies and we sell them and give the profits to Riley. We make blanket for Riley. In the fall we rake leaves for people.

What kind of hobbies do you have?
I like music and art. Whatever I can do to keep myself busy and not get bored.

What is your favorite game to play and why?
I like card games. I’m not always good at them, but I do enjoy playing them. Especially with my friends. I always manage to forget the rules of the game so they always have to explain them to me, but I have fun either way.

Who is one of your friends that make you laugh all the time?
My best friends are probably Ashlyn and Karissa. They always make me laugh no matter what is going on. We have a lot of the same things that we find funny. Usually if one of us thinks something is funny the rest of us do as well.

Who is your most academically inclined friend?
Probably Karissa. She is probably the smartest person I know honestly.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how will you get there?
I’m going to college. I’m not sure how long that will take me because I might want to get my Masters degree. I’m going into history. I’m hoping to work either in a museum or in a library. I’m mostly trying to figure it out as I go along.

Nice! Is there a particular city you would like to end up in?
Not a particular city. I’d like to stay in Indiana because my whole family is here.

It sounds to me like you have a really good future ahead of you. Great grades, your working hard to get to college and get a scholarship. You have a lot to be proud of.
