Cooper Shalley: Student at Bluffton High School
What grade are you in?
I’m a Sophomore.
Do you like your name?
I do like my name, yeah.
If you could change it what would it be?
I don’t know. I’d probably have to think about it more. I like Cooper.
What is the funniest thing that happened to you this week?
I had to like clean the pool because I’m a lifeguard at Wells Community. It was a really sludgy area and we clean it out with the hose and stuff like that. Me and this other kid were doing it and it got really slippery and I fell down in the really mucky part. That was kind of funny.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
I think Belize because my grandma, her parents were missionaries there and she was like born there. I think it’s kind of a cool place anyways so I think I have kind of a slight connection to it.
Tell me something about a parent or relative that you find awesome and you hope to accomplish someday?
My grandpa is really into himself spiritually and that kind of stuff. And I just kind of want to be that one day. Like just be me to the fullest I can. I see that in him.
What are you most proud of?
I used to be like a bigger kid and I kind of slimmed down so I’m pretty proud of that. Cause I was kind of like rough back in the day.
How do you feel about out of the normal colored hair and which one do you think you would try if you had to?
It doesn’t bother me. If someone wants to have like red hair then that’s kind of cool sometimes. I’m on the swim team and we all did that for sectionals last year. We all dyed our hair red, so that was kind of funny. But if I had to do it I probably wouldn’t keep it that long personally for me. Like once I might go with green or something just to see how it looked for like just a day and a half or something.
Do you own a pet? Tell us his/her breed, name, how he/she got that name. What is something funny he/she does?
Yes, I do. It’s Griffin. He’s a little Bichon Frise dog, white. We were just tossing around names. My parents and brother wanted to name him Cash and I was like ‘ehh’ I think that’s kind of dumb to be honest and we kind of just went over it. Looked up dog names. We thought Griffin was kind of cool. Sometimes he gets really rowdy like a lot of dogs do. He starts running around randomly and then if you stomp your foot he starts running around hard core. It’s kind of funny because he like runs around the entire house and he has a really high pitched bark.
Can you tell me a joke?
I used to tell my friends really stupid ones like everyday. Why couldn’t the pirate see the movie?
Because it was rated Aaargh.
What is your favorite class in school and why?
I kind of like the English classes because it’s relatable. You can write about stuff. You can put your own spin on it other than like 2+2 is always 4 in Math. I like social studies too because it’s learning about the world. Those kinds of things I like.
Are you involved in school sports, music or other activities? Any outside of school activities?
Swimming. I did cross country this year and track. I think I’m going to do cross again. I kind of have knee problems, but if I can I will and I’ll probably do swim and track again.
If you could start an extra-curricular club at school what would it be?
Public and Debate Club, I think arguing with people is kind of fun if you have like a controlled, not get rowdy kind of thing. I think it would be kind of fun.
Who is one of your friends that makes you laugh all the time?
Evan is pretty funny because he does kind of crazy things sometimes. It makes me laugh.
Who is your most academically inclined friend?
Can my brother be a friend?
Ok well, he’s like valedictorian of the senior class right now. He’s a math wiz, which is kind of annoying because I’m not that good at math. He’s like crazy at it so I’d probably say him. His name is Hudson.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how will you get there?
I plan to graduate college somewhere. I don’t know where. I’m thinking about majoring in like global studies. Hopefully, in a different country maybe. Like traveling the world and stuff like that for a job.
Thank you for meeting with me. You are an interesting young man and I can tell you have a bright future ahead.
