Eugene R. “Hugo” Murchland, 90, of Decatur, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his residence.
He was born June 27, 1923, in Dixon, Ind., to William B. Murchland and Amelia M. A. Zimmerman Murchland. He married Mary Jane Worden April 13, 1947, at the Salem United Church of Christ in Magley.
He served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Magley, where he served on several church boards. He was also a member of American Legion Post 43 of Decatur.
He was a graduate of Monroeville High School and retired in 1985 from Fruehauf with 43 years of service.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Jane Murchland of Decatur; two daughters, Donna Nash of Craigville and Beverly Murchland of Fort Wayne; three sons, Dean Murchland of Las Vegas, Nev., Max Murchland of Markle, and Kim David Murchland of Kimmel; a twin sister, Jean Renier of Monroeville; a brother, William Murchland Jr. of Parowan, Utah; and 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gale Murchland; five sisters, Lela Siders, Edith Siders, Samantha Waterman, Lula Mull and Glenna Murchland; and two brothers, Paul Murchland and Olen “Tony” Murchland.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, at the Salem United Church of Christ in Magley. Calling hours will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Burial will be at Salem United Church of Christ cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 43 of Decatur.
Preferred memorials are to the Adams County Community Foundation – Heart Fund or Cancer Fund.
