John ‘Jack’ Hunter, 89

John J. “Jack” Hunter, 89, of Bluffton, passed away at 8:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at River Terrace Estates in Bluffton.
Jack was born Sept. 1, 1923 in Decatur to Joseph and Francis (Baker) Hunter. He was very active in the Boy Scouts, obtaining his Eagle Scout award and later served as a Scout leader for several years. He graduated from Decatur High School before enlisting in the United States Navy Air Corp during World War II.
On Aug. 15, 1950 he married Phillis M. Sills in Bluffton. They shared 62 years together before she preceded him in death on April 4, 2012. Both Jack and Phillis loved to dance. Together they traveled many places to ballroom dance including Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Evansville. They also traveled the world together and enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas.
Jack was a natural born salesman. He sold for American Standard, Central Plumbing Supply and Wabash Electric. He was a member of the Bluffton Elks and The American Legion Post 111 of Bluffton.
Jack is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Jim Hunter.
Calling hours are Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home and one hour prior to service Saturday. A service celebrating Jack’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at the funeral home with Jeff Lemler, Certified Life Celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery.
Military honors will be preformed by the American Legion Post 111 of Bluffton and the United States Navy Honor Guard. Preferred memorials are to the American Legion Post 111 through the funeral home.
