Wells County champion speller Bailey Gerber of Norwell Middle School placed third in the regional spelling bee Saturday in Fort Wayne.
Alexia Zawadzke of St. John Lutheran School in Noble County was the regional winner, with Elizabeth Shepherd of Tippecanoe Valley Middle School in Kosciusko County placing second.
The winning word was “delphinium,” which is a type of flower.
A total of 16 spellers from northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio participated in the bee.
Zawadzke advances on to the national Scripps-Howard spelling bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
