Karen York of Bluffton was the willing recipient of an “Ambush Makeover” on the fourth hour of the “Today” show Thursday morning.
York, who retired this year as a second-grade teacher at Bluffton-Harrison Elementary School, went to New York with her husband, Dan, to visit their sons — Chris, 27, and Brandon, 25. While there, she wanted to get one of the makeovers the show does on Thursday mornings. Fashion, hair, and cosmetic experts choose individuals from out of the crowd to be made over.
Karen York was one of two women chosen Thursday morning. Her husband held a sign that said “Please babe-a-fy my wife.” One of her sons held up a sign that said, “Make my mom a ‘New York.’” Her own sign said, “I just retired after teaching 33 years.”
When she reappeared, after her makeover, her husband and sons were blindfolded. She came out and they removed their blindfolds and looked at her — and were all astonished. Her hair had been lightened and she received a whole new look.
Interviewed Thursday afternoon, she was delighted by what had happened to her. Her sense of humor was on display on the show, and it carried over as she reflected on the experience.
“I was really good-looking before, but now I’m a babe,” she said. “I had said I was a babe before, but it was always in jest. Now, it’s for real.”
Her husband was also happy. “She just looks amazing, and much younger,” he said. “I was not expecting her to look that way.”
