Marion’s Barnes wins Indiana Amateur
The championship of the Indiana Amateur golf tournament came down to the wire Friday, when Erik Barnes of Marion and Erich Johnston of Fort Wayne battled it out at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru.
Barnes, who was tied with Johnston heading into the final 18th hole, pulled out a squeaker by one shot.
Barnes’ drive flew the water but landed in the fairway bunker, while Johnston found the middle of the fairway. Both players missed the green, but Barnes got his up-and-down for the title.
“This is awesome, I can’t stop shaking,” Barnes said.
Barnes finished six under, while Johnston was five under.
Andrew Varner, also of Marion, finished up third at four under. Brad Smith was fourth at two under.
Decatur’s Keith Blythe was 15th at four over, while Justin Imel of Markle ended up in a four-way tie for 39th place at 299.
