Squaws, Lady Jets to collide

The defending champion Bellmont Squaws will be facing their Adams County rivals, the Adams Central Lady Jets, on Saturday in the championship match of the Norwell IHSAA girls tennis sectional.

Bellmont swept the Huntington Lady Vikings 5-0 in the semifinals Friday, while Adams Central blitzed their other Adams County rivals, the South Adams Lady Starfires, 5-0, in the other semifinal contest.

Before the Lady Jets downed South Adams, they had to complete Thursday’s rain-delayed matches against the Norwell Lady Knights. The Lady Jets won the three suspended matches for a sweep of Norwell.

Lady Knights rout South Side

Amanda Welches ripped a pair of doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Norwell Lady Knights softball team to a 10-2 victory over the visiting Fort Wayne South Side Archers on Friday.

Kelsey Kline and Cassie Rice each added two RBIs, while Natalie Meyer, Carolyn Vavrek and Korah Graft each plated one run.

Starting pitcher Elizabeth Ault (4-3) notched another win, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. The Lady Knights upped their season record to 12-15.

Lady Knight basketball camps slated

The Norwell girls basketball camps will be held June 9-12 in the Norwell High School auxiliary gym. Girls entering grades 1-4 will meet from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and grades 5-8 will meet from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per camper or $30 per camper for two or more girls from the same family. Otters accepting entries

The Huntington-Wells Otters swim team is accepting entries for the Glen S. Hummer Huntington Mile on Saturday, June 14 at Lake Clare. Basic registration is $20; single day insurance coverage of $12 is required for individuals not affiliated with a USA Swimming or U.S. Masters Swimming team. All swimmers pre-registered by May 31 will receive a complimentary T-shirt. Day-of-race entries will be accepted. Check-in for the Masters’ one-mile swim (ages 18 and above) begins at 7  a.m. with the race starting at 8:30. Age group/youth swimmers check in at 9 a.m. and begin racing at 10:15. The afternoon features a 5K swim, which in 2007 served as a pre-qualifier to the U.S. Olympic trials. Norwell girls tennis camp slated

The Norwell Girls Tennis Camp will be held June 16-20 for Norwell girls entering grades 5-9 in 2008-09. Cost is $25, which includes a T-shirt. The morning sessions will be conducted by Norwell coach Terri Worden. Application forms are available at Lancaster and Ossian elementary schools and Norwell Middle School.
