Squaws eliminate Lady Tigers
Before the rain started falling Thursday evening, the Bellmont Squaws quickly began their defense of the Norwell IHSAA girls tennis sectional with a 5-0 sweep of the Bluffton Lady Tigers.
In the other first-round sectional confrontation, rain interrupted the remaining matches between the Adams Central Lady Jets and Norwell Lady Knights. Adams Central was leading 2-0 with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. The other three matches will be finished today before the semifinals.
Bluffton’s No. 1 singles player, Cristina Gratton, gave Bellmont’s April Erxleben a battle before falling in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. In No. 2 singles, Brean Smith topped Kara Fiechter 6-2, 6-2. Jessica Basham beat Jenny Bennett 6-0, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.
In No. 1 doubles, Quinci Huffine and Abbie Doan defeated Amy Baker and Angie Smith 6-0, 6-1. In No. 2 doubles, Christina Baker and Tory Darling beat Jessica Meitzler and Lauren Dunwiddie 6-1, 6-1.
Adams Central’s Rachel Barger defeated Norwell’s Alyssa Tucker 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Lauren Harvey downed Sara Nahrwold 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.
Lady Knights pound North Side
Norwell junior Melissa Werling belted her sixth home run of the season, a grand slam, to lead the Lady Knights softball team to a 14-0 whitewash of Fort Wayne North Side on Thursday in Fort Wayne.
Danielle Davis was the winning pitcher. Kelsey Kline and Courtney Brodie each doubled for the Lady Knights.
Lady Tigers beat Lady Starfires
Jordan Moore and Chelsea Hunt each doubled and drove in a run Thursday to lead the Bluffton Lady Tigers softball team to a 4-1 victory over the South Adams Lady Starfires at Berne.
Brittany Folk was the winning pitcher, giving up an unearned run on just two hits, and striking out seven. Eliza Walburn also doubled and scored for the Lady Tigers (14-13).
Amber Melick was the losing pitcher, as South Adams fell to 13-8. Ashton Morgan tripled and Melick had a RBI. Melick gave up two earned runs on four hits, walked two, hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch.
Jets sink Bluffton golfers
On a cold, rainy day, the Adams Central Jets defeated the Bluffton Tigers 188-194 in boys golf action Thursday at Timber Ridge golf course in Bluffton.
Conner Saum shot a 46 to lead the Jets and all golfers. John Goulet and Jess Pyle each added a 47 for Adams Central, while Kaleb Davis turned in a 48. Mason Baughman finished with a 54.
Bluffton was led by Jonas Kristensen and Jason Cook with 47s. Price Kyle followed with a 48, while Tyler Mohler shot a 52. Ryan Coyne added a 59.
The junior varsity Jets also won, 206-214, with the following individual scores: Austin Killen 54, Zach Gagel 47, Jerrod Cobb 53, Clint Pfeiffer 52 and Kyle Blevins 59. The scores for the Tigers were: Jackson Bates 54, Nick Landrum 47, Bobby Perry 52, Aaron Lautzenheiser 61 and Sean Ashman 64.
Lady Knight basketball camps slated
The Norwell girls basketball camps will be held June 9-12 in the Norwell High School auxiliary gym. Girls entering grades 1-4 will meet from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and grades 5-8 will meet from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per camper or $30 per camper for two or more girls from the same family.
