Saturday Sub: Solemn reminders of solemn sacrifice

Preparing a column for this space on Memorial Day weekend has always been a little bit of a struggle. There have been occasions when I felt I had something original to add, but for the most part, I’ve always felt more comfortable in letting others convey the traditional, appropriate Memorial Day message.
So I had prepared a column about other local issues, which would have appeared here today, until I came across the editorial cartoon you see on this page. I immediately thought of the speaker at our local Memorial Day services, Michelle Hiester Marcum. And — almost immediately afterwards — I read the column below from one of our syndicated writers.
Not only did I feel my prepared column inappropriate, but was equally touched by Tom Purcell’s portrait of those who honor our fallen heroes every day. It is a “must read” for anyone who enjoys the freedoms paid for by others.
