News-Banner wins three awards
December 3, 2012
The News-Banner won two first-place awards Saturday at the Hoosier State Press Association’s newsroom seminar and awards program in Indianapolis.
The News-Banner was judged to have the best special section and the best website in Division 3, the category for newspapers of under 8,000 in circulation.
News-Banner assistant editor Dave Schultz also received a second place award for headline writing.
The special section award went to the News-Banner for the 2012 “Who We Are,” produced last June in a magazine-style format. “Extensive local coverage,” the judge’s comments said. “Consistent reporting. Creative look into the community. Great piece of journalism.”
Writing and photography for the 64-page section was done by Barbara Barbieri, Chet Baumgartner, Mark Miller, Schultz, Frank Shanly, Glen Werling, and intern Jessica Williams of the News-Banner staff, with additional stories by Terri Hughes-Lazzell, Justin Peeper, and Kayleen Reusser. Emily Marshall of the Wells County Public Library also contributed a story.
The judge’s comment said the N-B’s website was “very nicely done. Strong design and navigation.”
The website’s design was done by Reusser Design of Roanoke, working with the News-Banner staff. The site is maintained daily primarily by Baumgartner and Patty Elwell.
